This most beautifully appointed, detached holiday cottage sits right on the shores of Loch Long on the glorious west coast of Scotland, less than an hour's drive from Glasgow. You can spend your time here relaxing in tranquility, watching the tide come in and out whilst following the antics of gulls, oystercatchers, eider ducks, gannets and porpoises to name but a few.
The cottage is only accessible by vehicle (4 x 4 or similar) at low tide as the driveway disappears under the water at high tide. Footpath access is available at all times over a metal foot bridge where you can watch the resident Dipper.
The final stage of the journey to The Croft is not for the faint hearted! A 150 metre dirt track leads to a shingle beach that is accessible with a 4x4 vehicle, with a parking space available for guests. Bags will need to be carried the short distance to the cottage (a wheelbarrow is available), so sensible shoes are a must!
Inside the open plan living area is spacious and airy, with a fully-equipped kitchen at one end and a cosy sitting area at the other, where the comfortable seating is centred around a multi-fuel stove. The double bedroom is on a mezzanine level that overlooks the living room. The south/west aspect of the cottage offers stunning views and amazing sunsets and during the summer months breakfast can be taken on the lovely little private paved seating area.
A fearless fox and a family of roe dear have made the garden their own and can frequently be seen at dusk and dawn. In the autumn, rutting deer can also be heard from across the loch. As there is no light pollution around the night skies are absolutely stunning and amateur astronomers will be able to pick out many different stars and constellations.
There is direct access to the beach and a private slip to launch a small boat/kayak/dingy. Loch Long itself is a deep sea loch that offers a chance for you to try to catch your supper, with mackerel in the summer, as well as sea trout, pollock and grey mullet. The Croft is an ideal base for bird watchers, walkers, cyclists, kayakers and anyone wanting to recharge their batteries.
Please note: Due to the difficult access to The Croft, it is not suitable for people with limited mobility.
The cottage is a tranquil retreat in a most popular tourist area of Scotland. Lovely Loch Lomond, with its hotels, sailing opportunities, designer shopping at Loch Lomond Shores and Loch Lomond Championship golf course, is just over the hill by a very fast and scenic road.
From there you can head into the hills (perhaps even climb Ben Lomond itself) or up to Crianlarich from which Oban, Fort William and all the attractions of the central west coast are open to you.
The nearest pub to the cottage is about a mile away and there are shops at Garelochhead (3 miles), where you can you can hop on the West Highland Line to either Oban or Fort William. The journey on the West Highland Line is rated as one of the top ten rail journeys in the World and has to surely be on everyone's bucket list!
Those with an interest in art and architecture will find enjoy visiting Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Hill House in Helensburgh (9 miles). Of course, Glasgow itself has the Mackintosh-designed Glasgow School of Art, while his 'House of an Art Lover' in Bellahouston Park is also open to the public.
Glasgow is a city with a real buzz and great shopping, theatres, art galleries, sports facilities, green spaces and world-class restaurants. It is reachable in an hour by train and the famous city of Stirling is also only an hour’s drive away.
Alternatively, you can drive through the spectacular and well-named 'Arrochar Alps' to Loch Fyne, the famous oyster bar at Cairndow and Inveraray. There are some splendid gardens down this way, at Ardkinglas and Crarae, to name but two.
