Muckle Howf means ‘big meeting place’ and that is certainly indicative of the spacious, inviting accommodation to be found inside this traditional steading which has been given an amazing new lease of life. Inside, charm and elegance combine with modern comforts in the snug where the TV has been set cleverly into the wall above the wood-burning stove so both can be enjoyed at the same time.
When it comes to meal times the open plan kitchen/dining room is very cheerful and bright with a large dining table that has plenty of space for everyone. It also has direct access out to the lovely raised deck where the luxurious hot tub is situated. After all, what could be more idyllic than a long soak in the bubbles after the day’s adventures? Downstairs there is also the unexpected bonus of underfloor heating and a shower room with an infra-red sauna to unwind in.
At the top of the stairs in the sitting room the glass gable end really shows off the outlook over the wonderful grounds to the rolling countryside beyond. It even has a little balcony allowing guests to have their own ‘wherefore art thou Romeo’ moment. The en suite master bedroom on this level comes with a king-size bed and large picture windows framing yet more of those amazing views and the other two bedrooms are flexible in that they can be configured with either twin or super king-size beds as required.
Outdoor seating just across from the house allows the peaceful surroundings to be fully appreciated whilst relaxing with a morning cuppa or evening drink. It is a joy to follow the paths leading around the plants and flowers in the beautiful garden where it seems there is something new to discover around every corner. There is a small stream within the grounds so care should be taken, particularly with children.
Just across the courtyard behind the house is the lovely ‘wee shop’ where an honesty box system allows milk, fresh eggs, additional logs and an impressive selection of other groceries to be bought. The owners really have thought of everything!
It is very pretty to walk around the rest of the farm and explore and the lochan at its heart is really picturesque. Animal lovers will be in their element here as the grounds are home to a delightful array of animals with everything from chickens and donkeys to goats, alpacas and charming Highland cattle. It is great to see the animals wandering around freely together in their fields and the goats are especially entertaining to watch as they climb on their various toys.
Nearby Dunblane (4 miles) has a small supermarket and 18-hole golf course and, as Andy Murray grew up here, the post box that was painted gold in honour of his Olympic win makes for a good photo opportunity. The train station there makes it easy to pop to Stirling (12 miles) or head off further afield for day trips to wonderful Glasgow or gorgeous Edinburgh in less than an hour’s journey time.
Scenic Stirling (12 miles) with its imposing castle is less than half an hour’s drive away where the impressive National Wallace Monument can be seen for miles around. It is possible to climb up the 246 step spiral staircase to reach the top and admire stunning, expansive views of the city.
At the small but perfectly formed Stirling Distillery they specialise in creating tasty, aromatic gins. Their daily tours start off on the right note with welcome cocktails and their guides are incredibly knowledgeable. Another interesting activity whilst in the city is a visit to the Old Town Jail to hear about the punishments the prisoners once had to endure, or have a go at one of their exciting escape rooms where puzzles have to be completed and clues gathered in order to get out within the allotted time slot.
Golf enthusiasts will be very well aware that they are close to the magnificent, world famous Gleneagles (8.5 miles). With the choice of three championship golf courses to try out, as well as the 9-hole ‘wee course’, it offers a truly unforgettable golfing experience walking in the footsteps of some of the greats.
