South Mill is an interesting conversion of a 19th century mill in a pretty courtyard setting in the little hamlet of Trochry, just 3.5 miles from Dunkeld in Perthshire.

Having been converted along with its sister property North Mill, it now offers all modern comforts whilst retaining original features including the stone lintel above the door that dates right back to 1843. Some items such as the old mill wheels have been repurposed to great effect having been cleverly turned into tables and there are fascinating photos dotted around of how the building once looked.
The main open plan living accommodation has been laid out upstairs to make the most of the light and airy feel there, with a wood-burning stove that keeps it cosy throughout. French doors open out onto a west-facing balcony that is a lovely spot to enjoy the sun in the afternoon/evenings whilst keeping an eye out for birds and other wildlife including ever entertaining red squirrels.
The kitchen area is neat and well-equipped for cooking and an arrangement is in place with a local cook who can deliver meals frozen ready to be heated up, so a night off from cooking can be enjoyed without even leaving the house!
Downstairs the bedroom has zip-link beds that can be configured as either a king-size double bed or as twin beds for maximum flexibility. Off it the modern bathroom has the added luxury of underfloor heating that is a welcome treat first thing in the morning.
Parking is just adjacent to the mill and the charming courtyard garden can be a real sun trap with the shrubs and plants that line the path adding a splash of colour. There are lots of walks in the surrounding countryside and the owner has thoughtfully provided some useful maps that detail them.
Dunkeld (4 miles) is a well preserved historic town that is known for its impressive cathedral on the banks of the River Tay. It is very well catered for in terms of shops, a small supermarket and eating places.
There is also a very picturesque 18 hole golf course to try and if you fancy exploring the area on two wheels, bike hire is available from Progression Bikes.
If a day spent sightseeing or shopping in the city beckons, Perth is easily reachable in under half an hour’s train ride from Birnam (4 miles).
The Loch of the Lowes RSPB reserve (6.5 miles) is definitely worth a visit, with the highlight being the pair of breeding ospreys that return every year. An observation hide has been set up just 150 metres from the nest so you can get right up close to these fascinating birds without disturbing them. Otters can be seen throughout the year and from May to August you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some beavers.
Whisky enthusiasts will enjoy a tour at the Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery (14 miles) and the Cluny House gardens just outside Aberfeldy are a great place to spend an afternoon wandering around admiring the beautiful plants and flowers and spotting the cheeky red squirrels.
There are watersports out on Loch Tay from Kenmore (17 miles) with canoe, kayak, paddle board and pedalo hire and a water trampoline that is fun for all ages.

Water is from a private source which is UV filtered and regularly tested; however (as is typical in many parts of Scotland) it can become discoloured, particularly after heavy rainfall. Guests may therefore prefer to bring bottled water to drink. A maximum of 1 pet is welcome at an additional charge (1 medium dog, 1 small dog). No smoking.
