Grandpa would probably be hard put to recognise the cottage now as it has been so well modernised and stylishly refurbished whilst retaining a warm and welcoming feel throughout.
At the heart of the house is the charming wooden beamed sitting room with a wood-burning stove that ensures year round cosiness and just begs to be curled up in front of. The large kitchen is very chic and is very well-equipped with everything needed for cooking and a handy dining area is set out alongside.
A useful boot room and WC complete the downstairs accommodation and upstairs are the two bedrooms and a family bathroom with a modern free-standing bath with a shower over. The spacious master double bedroom has a luxurious feel with a neat little dressing table and roof windows that keep it lovely and bright.
Ample parking is right by the front door and behind the cottage is an elevated patio area (with furniture) that is the ideal place to enjoy an evening drink whilst admiring the extensive views southwards across the valley to nearby Drummond Hill. A hot tub is available to hire at an additional charge. Use of the tennis court (shared with Balnald Farmhouse) can be arranged for guests.
In walking distance along the road in pretty Fortingall (0.25 miles) is an excellent hotel restaurant to stop at for a meal or drink in the evening. There is an a la carte menu available in the restaurant or more informal meals can be taken at the bar and on Friday nights local musicians play live music.
The spectacular Fortingall Yew that is located in the churchyard here that is dated as being between 4,000 and 5,000 years old making it the oldest living thing in Europe.
Once established in this idyllic spot, you may be hard put to decide between the many local attractions. Loch Tay offers a variety of water sports and there are golf courses at either end of the loch in Killin and Kenmore.
Ben Lawers, overlooking the loch, will be of interest to walkers, while just to the north is Schiehallion, the 'Fairy Mountain'. The famous and breathtakingly beautiful Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch are within 15 miles of the cottage, while to the north west is rugged Glen Lyon, Scotland's longest glen.
Aberfeldy (8 miles) has a leisure centre and a cinema and from there the road runs back along the banks of the River Tay to Grandtully where there is fishing and white water rafting to try out. The busy town of Pitlochry (23 miles) has a Festival Theatre where the boast is that you can ‘stay six days and see six plays’. Or, head south to the most attractive village of Dunkeld that has links to Beatrix Potter who once stayed there, and a historic and partially ruined cathedral.
At the nearby Hermitage there are pleasant woodland walks along the River Braan to the spectacular waterfalls, while to the north of the village, the RSPB site at the Loch of the Lowes gives visitors the chance to see the ospreys who return each year to raise their young. There really is very little left to wish for at Grandpa's Cottage!
