Dunkeld

This charming little town lies in a stunning landscape of woodlands and hills, now bypassed by the busy A9, on the River Tay between Perth and Pitlochry. It has a single main street, full of interesting little shops and eating places and a very pretty square, which leads on to its impressive Cathedral.

History and Beautiful Countryside to Explore

Dunkeld Castle

The 14th century Dunkeld Cathedral lies within a beautiful wooded parkland - half of the cathedral was damaged during the Reformation and the 1689 Battle of Dunkeld and is in ruins, but half is still used as a church.

The lovely surrounding countryside is full of interest - there is the splendid waterfall and riverside walks at the nearby Hermitage, the osprey hide on the Loch of the Lowes, the Beatrix Potter centre at Birnam (the original home of the woods which 'came to Dunsinane' in Shakespeare's Macbeth) and great walking, fishing and cycling. With excellent road connections and a railway halt at Birnam it also makes a great base for exploring in all directions.
