The cottage stands side on to the seafront and is just a few feet from the beach in the picturesque village of Gardenstown, about 45 miles northwest of Aberdeen.

It is typical of most of the houses near the seafront in these traditional fishing villages, built at a time when sea views were very much less important than shelter from the winter weather, hence the ‘side-on’ position. It’s all part of the traditional charm.

Inside, its beautifully refurbished and snug interior comprises an open plan living area and bathroom with stairs leading to two bright and inviting bedrooms. Heating is by electricity and multi-fuel stove, ensuring year round cosiness.

One wonders what the original fisherman would have made of his cottage now. Its old thick walls and small windows are still in place but the owners have taken great care to ensure the cottage enjoys the maximum amount of light. For those who hanker after a sea view, one of the windows in the sitting area does indeed face the sea and there are strategically placed binoculars on the window sill to ensure you don’t miss a single passing dolphin.

There is a small-decked patio area to the rear and the beach is just a few feet away to the front. Parents should be aware that there is an unguarded drop from the seafront to the beach below.

Map & Local

Gardenstown, built on a series of terraces which swarm up the cliffs behind the cottage, is a delightful place for a family holiday. In addition to the beach, there is a harbour just yards from the cottage, an inn and a few shops - so all is to hand.

You can walk along under the cliffs to equally picturesque Crovie. This scenic coast with its charming fishing villages offers golf, walking, boat trips, an abundance of marine wildlife and it is the sunniest place in Scotland as well!

Just over an hour’s drive will bring you to the ‘Granite City’ of Aberdeen. Taking the coastal route by Peterhead will take you past the RSPB reserve at the Loch of Strathbeg, known for its terns, pink-footed geese and whooper swans. There is also a very fine beach north of Aberdeen at Balmedie. If you care to venture further, south of Aberdeen the spectacular ruin of Dunottar Castle on its rocky promontory, should not be missed.

In this direction, too, garden lovers will enjoy a visit to the NT gardens at Pitmedden, near Ellon, perhaps in conjunction with the other NT gardens at Leith Hall near Huntly. Two other imposing National Trust properties, Haddon House and Fyvie Castle are also within easy driving distance of Gardenstown and would make another enjoyable day out.

For railway enthusiasts the Keith and Dufftown steam railway takes you well along the Whisky Trail, with distilleries to right and left.
