Overview

Dunanfiew means ‘hillock of the fold’ and inside it is cosy and inviting. The living area is open plan with an original wooden-beamed ceiling and comfy seating around the wood-burning stove in a feature stone fireplace at its heart.

There is a dining area alongside and the other end of the room is taken up by a spacious, modern kitchen area that is well-equipped and even has a dishwasher so you don’t have the chore of washing up. The sunroom at the front of the cottage provides further seating to spread out into and there is also a handy WC on this level.

The traditional wooden beams continue upstairs where there is a double and a single bedroom that both also have coombed ceilings and original gate latch doors. The master double bedroom has wonderful views out over the hills from its dormer window and the neat single bedroom is light and bright and leads through to the family bathroom.

The cottage sits in a walled rough grassed garden that has expansive views out over the surrounding countryside. There is ample parking and even a pretty burn at the bottom of the garden (care to be taken with children). As the cottage is so remote there are amazing, totally unpolluted dark skies that are ideal for stargazing in the evenings.

The private track can be driven (with care) in a normal car and with no other houses in sight, when you arrive you really do have the place all to yourself.

Map & Local

Dunanfiew is within the Cairngorms National Park and you can walk off out into the hills right from the doorstep. Fishing for brown trout and salmon is available on the nearby River Don and there is plenty of wildlife to keep an eye out for including red squirrels, buzzards, eagles and roe deer.

Heading north is the impressive Corgarff Castle (3 miles), a 16th century tower house with an unusual star-shaped wall that surrounds it. At one time it was home to troops who were tasked with stamping out illegal whisky production and smuggling. It has since been restored and is open to the public during the summer months. The Lecht ski resort (4.5 miles) is one of Scotland’s top ski resorts offering skiing and snowboarding in the winter, as well as mountain biking in summer and go-karting all year round.

You are very much on the whisky trail here with the distillery at Glenlivet only 40 minutes’ drive away, where you can take a tour and learn all about the history of the famous tipple. At the Loch Garten Osprey Centre in Boat of Garten (29 miles) there are many different birds to spot from capercaillies and crested tits to spotted flycatchers and whooper swans. A pair of breeding ospreys also return to the reserve every year in the spring/summer and there is a fascinating live video feed that looks right into the nest for a close-up view of the fluffy chicks.

If you head south from the cottage there is a small grocery shop/PO in Bellabeg (10 miles) and the nearest place to stock up on supermarket supplies is in Ballater (17 miles) where there is also a swimming pool.
