Overview

The main living space inside is really bright and inviting and has been laid out open plan with a chic kitchen area at one end, comfy seating at the other and breakfast bar dining in between. Biomass heating keeps it all nice and cosy, although there is also the option of the wood-burning stove that is quite blissful to spend the evening in front of watching a film or enjoying a wee dram.

The stylish bathroom has the choice of a walk-in shower or a luxurious rolltop bath and the seating in the charming sunroom is great for taking in the view out over the garden to the surrounding fields and beautiful hills beyond.

There is a utility area in the entrance hall with laundry facilities and storage for shoes and boots, etc and stairs from the sitting room lead up to the spacious double bedroom with its king-size bed.

Outside the large covered porch area is useful for drying dogs or removing outerwear. A patio area wraps around the house with steps leading down to the rest of the garden which has been laid to grass with a seating area for picnics or barbeques and views for miles around. The owners live just across the way so are on hand for any queries but are happy to leave guests to enjoy themselves.

Map & Local

Alford (5 miles) has a grocery shop and a choice of places to eat with a restaurant in The Haughton Arms and the Alford Bistro within the village, both of which serve excellent meals.

Alford Golf Club welcomes visitors to enjoy a round or two and there is a swimming pool and various sports courts to hire within the Alford Community Campus. History enthusiasts will love the little Alford Heritage Centre (open Apr to Oct) that offers an interesting insight into rural life over the years and the Grampian Transport Museum will appeal to lovers of both modern and historic vehicles.

A must for the agenda is a visit to the ruins of historic Kildrummy Castle (13.5 miles), a 13th century stronghold that was once the seat of the Earls of Mar. The castle has quite a turbulent history and fascinating display boards are dotted around the site that show how it once would have looked.

Mountain bikers can head over to Pitfichie Forest (12.5 miles) to try the various trails there with a stop off along the way to see the Whitehill Stone Circle. There are also blue and red graded mountain biking trails on the Glenlivet Estate just over an hour’s drive away.

If snowsports are of more interest The Lecht ski resort (36 miles) is just the place with 20 different pistes of varying difficulty and 14 lifts that make short work of the ascents. For a bit of practise beforehand Alford has its very own dry ski slope which can be used for skiing, snowboarding and tubing for the kids.

From the station at Insch (7 miles) it is only a 40 minute train journey into the heart of Aberdeen for a day’s shopping or sightseeing. Unusually for a city, Aberdeen also has a lovely sandy beach to wander along.
