It is one of the most sought-after cottages in the south of Scotland, tucked away all on its own in glorious hill country at the side of a very quiet farm road (tarmac) that leads only to a reservoir.
This traditional stone-built, comfortably but simply furnished, former shepherd's cottage is approached via a small bridge over a stream at its front and with high rounded green hills rising in tiers at its rear. It has a devoted band of followers who return year after year and it is one which will have great appeal to those who really value peace and privacy and enjoy the great outdoors.
The sitting room with its open fire makes a cosy retreat for unwinding at the end of a busy day, perhaps with a restorative glass of Scotch. From the window you can enjoy an uninterrupted view of unspoilt hill country without a house in sight and many visitors choose to stay-put, unwinding with their feet up by the open fire. There is also a spacious and modern fitted kitchen with all necessary appliances.
All on one level, there are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, that are both neatly furnished and very comfortable. A shower room completes that accommodation.
Easily accessible from the fast M74, it is convenient for excursions to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Moffat and Peebles - all about 45 minutes by car (and then quickly to points further north and west).
There is excellent walking from the cottage, fishing on the River Clyde (permits available), four good golf courses within easy radius and fine bird-watching.
The nearest town of any size to the cottage is Biggar, which is a very charming market town with a broad main street and many excellent independent shops and good eating places. It also has a rather unique puppet theatre, which children in particular will love. A few miles to the west of Biggar is Lanark, another most attractive town with all facilities, including a famous livestock market and even a horse hotel!
Lanark’s other claim to fame is of course the World Heritage Site at New Lanark, the site of 19th century social reformer Robert Owen’s model village.
Situated on the Clyde, the Falls of Clyde are just a short stroll above the village, this social experiment has been wonderfully preserved and you can visit not only the mills (where you take a journey of discovery led by the ghost of mill worker Annie McLeod), but also the village store, schoolroom and Robert Owen’s own house. With lots of hands-on things to do, it makes for an unforgettable day out for all ages.
