The town rises in a series of terraces up the cliff side from its beach and the little harbour which is still used by some inshore fishing boats. Granny Curly's Cottage, set on one such terrace, is as picturesque as its surroundings, a traditional, 200 year old detached fisherman's cottage which once belonged to the owners' great grandmother, the original 'Granny Curly'.
Unusually for these cottages, it faces on to the sea, so it has lovely views and has now been beautifully refurbished to provide the cosiest and most comfortable accommodation imaginable.
For a cottage which, from the outside is such a traditional wee fisherman’s house, the interior of Granny Curly’s is a revelation indeed. The first pleasant revelation will surely be the surprising amount of space. The sitting room is a very light and comfortable room, with inviting seating and a cheerful open fire to keep it cosy.
The dining kitchen is very large as well, with the original exposed wooden floorboards and with the wood-burning stove situated in the rather splendid fireplace. The stylish kitchen area is completely up-to-date, with room both for a range cooker and double Belfast sink as well as a full range of modern appliances.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, both of which are spacious, warm and inviting with slightly coombed ceilings. The family bathroom has plenty of room for its bath and separate shower. Another pleasing touch throughout the cottage is the maritime theme that is evident in the soft furnishings and seascapes on the walls. At Granny Curly’s there is no chance of forgetting for a moment that you are at the seaside!
Gardenstown is on Gamrie bay, a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), flanked by imposing cliffs and interesting rocky outcrops which are home to seabird colonies and where you may see dolphins, seals and a myriad of flowers.
Children will be happy for hours playing on the sandy beach or hunting for crabs in the rock pools. You can walk along under the cliffs to the neighbouring, equally picturesque, village of Crovie, while Pennan (immortalised in the film 'Local Hero'), is also just along the coast.
Inland, there are excellent golf courses and great walking in the hills of the hinterland. The Speyside Way is within easy reach, or you can make a 'Whisky Pilgrimage' along the Whisky Trail, sampling the wares as you go (taking along a non-drinking driver is recommended)!
For the occasional non-sunny day, there is the Marine Aquarium in Macduff (9 miles) and magnificent Duff House, an outpost of the National Gallery of Scotland. Gardenstown itself has a pub and a small restaurant overlooking the harbour, while Banff offers all facilities.
