Set on the historic Breda Estate, home to a chieftain of the Maclean Clan for four generations, Poppy Cottage is just 3 miles from the small but bustling town of Alford, 27 miles from lively Aberdeen, and less than a three-hour drive from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Yet the estate’s rolling fields, wooded hillsides, open moorland, and mighty river give guests a wonderful sense of being miles from anywhere.
Guests have a designated parking space just outside the steading’s impressive granite walls. An attractive archway leads across a spacious courtyard to the cottage. Once the busy hub of farm life, this traditional Aberdeenshire steading now offers tranquillity, privacy, and, at Poppy Cottage, the perfect break for two.
A granite patio provides level entry to the newly converted cottage, which features underfloor heating throughout the ground floor. The front door opens into a practical utility room with a washer-dryer, microwave, and storage cupboards, as well as access to the spacious and stylish downstairs bathroom.
At the heart of Poppy Cottage is a beautifully designed, light-filled open-plan living area. The sitting area has a comfortable two-seater sofa, a generous armchair, and a smart TV, while the dining table and chairs overlook the courtyard through patio doors that open onto a private patio and the communal courtyard beyond. The very well-equipped kitchen includes integrated appliances – a fridge-freezer, dishwasher, ceramic hob, and combined oven/grill – along with an excellent range of crockery, cookware, and generous cupboard space.
A striking oak staircase sweeps up to the first floor, home to the master bedroom and deluxe shower room. The bedroom features a king-size bed, a roof window framing lovely countryside views, and a dressing table, while a spacious walk-in wardrobe next door provides ample storage.
At the rear of the cottage, a small private courtyard is ideal for storing bikes and outdoor equipment. It’s also a perfect spot to savour the peace and quiet of Poppy Cottage – whether enjoying breakfast in the morning sunshine, starwatching over a glass of wine, or, if you’re lucky, catching a glimpse of the northern lights over Old Aberdeen.
The town of Alford is just 3 miles from Poppy Cottage and has a small supermarket and several independent shops, with a wider range of shops available in Banchory (21 miles).
Alford is home to the award-winning Grampian Transport Museum, which showcases a fascinating collection of vehicles from the 1800s to the present day. Alternatively, step back in time at Alford Heritage Museum, where you’ll find recreations of a schoolroom, tailor’s shop, and grocer’s from days gone by. There’s also a golf course, a narrow-gauge railway, scenic cycle routes, and, thanks to Alford Ski Centre’s dry ski slope, the opportunity for year-round skiing, snowboarding and tubing. In winter, traditional snow sports are also available at the Lecht Ski Centre (30 miles).
Food lovers are in for a treat at Poppy Cottage. Along with the fresh, seasonal local produce available in and around Alford, the popular Forbes Arms, set on the banks of the River Don, is just a mile away, while the Michelin Guide-recommended Kildrummy Inn is only three miles away. For a cosy night in, Alford Bistro offers a takeaway menu, and there’s a highly regarded fish and chip shop in the town.
For a day out, follow VisitScotland’s Castle Trail, which includes Craigievar Castle (7 miles), said to have inspired Disney’s iconic fairy-tale castle, and Castle Fraser (13 miles) with its spectacular gardens. For a more spirited outing, take to the Whisky Trail. Many distilleries offer visiting drivers a nip to take away, so you can enjoy your own tasting session back at Poppy Cottage.
Poppy Cottage is also perfectly located for exploring Cairngorms National Park (20 miles), visiting Royal Deeside (about 40 miles), or spending a day or evening in Aberdeen (27 miles), which offers all the attractions of a vibrant city, including theatres, cinemas, nightclubs, pubs, and museums.
Or simply stay closer to home and make the most of the outdoor adventures on the doorstep. Exclusive fishing rights for salmon, sea trout, and brown trout are available on a day-by-day basis on the River Don, while a network of trails winds through Breda Estate’s landscaped and wild gardens up to the summit of Breda Hill.
For a more challenging hike, the distinctive hill of Bennachie (11 miles) dominates the Aberdeenshire skyline. Local legend tells of a giant, Jock o’ Bennachie, who watches over the land. Enjoy the spectacular views from the summit — and remember to thank Jock on your way down.
