East Denwick Mill sits amidst glorious coastal scenery in a remote, rural spot that is ideal for enjoying peace, quiet and complete relaxation, on the Deerness peninsula of Mainland Orkney just 13 miles from Kirkwall.

As its name suggests, the building was once a mill that has been beautifully refurbished to create a most memorable holiday home with the old water wheel still visible in the garden. Huge picture windows in the sitting room make the very best of the wonderful seascape and allow for wildlife spotting.
The main living accommodation is all open plan downstairs with a bright dining area set up by the window looking out over the surrounding open countryside towards the sea and at the other end of the room is the stylish and very well-equipped kitchen area.
A central staircase leads up to the two spacious and light bedrooms, a double and a twin, that share a chic bathroom with both a walk-in shower and a free-standing bath that is perfect for a long soak.
Extensive green grasslands surround the house and fine evenings can be spent out in the garden where there are beautiful sunsets to admire as well as glorious views towards the islands of Shapinsay, Stronsay and Sanday. In the middle of the summer the days seem to last forever as the island experiences ‘white nights’ when it hardly gets dark at all.
Because of the remote location and north-facing aspect of the Mill it is also in an ideal location for spotting the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) during the winter months.
There are lovely walks along the cliffs straight from the house and just 15 minutes’ walk away within the Mull Head Nature Reserve there are plenty of seabirds and cliff nesting birds to look out for and the spectacular 'Gloup' to visit, a collapsed sea cave that is 80 feet deep!
Basic provisions can be picked up from Deerness Stores (2.5 miles) or Kirkwall (13 miles) has the usual range of supermarkets and other stores. It is also home to the beautiful Magnus Cathedral and the remains of the Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces and ferry trips run from the harbour to outlying islands such as Sanday, Stronsay, and Westray.
There are three different distilleries in and around Kirkwall offering tours and tastings - the Orkney Distillery that is famed for its Orcadian gin, the Deerness Distillery that has won awards for its gin and vodka and The Highland Park distillery that produces excellent malt whisky.
Orkney has a rich and varied history dating back some 5,000 years and the ancient sites of Maeshow, the Standing Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodgar, the Yesnaby Stacks and the famous Skara Brae are all absolute must-sees.
The southern part of the mainland certainly has its fair share of attractions including the Italian Chapel that was built by Italian prisoners of war, the Churchill Barriers (causeways linking the mainland to the north and south) and the Tomb of the Eagles, an intriguing Neolithic chambered tomb.
