Overview

Inside, the inviting sitting room is kept light and bright by French doors that lead out to the garden and the colourful, comfy seating makes the ideal spot for relaxing by the wood-burning stove with its ingenious built-in oven.

The kitchen is very stylish with an elegant dining area at one end and all the space and equipment needed to create some culinary masterpieces, with a dishwasher that takes care of the clean up afterwards. A utility room keeps the laundry facilities neatly out of sight and provides useful drying space for coats and boots, with a wet room just off it.

The cottage is all on one level with three attractive double bedrooms (one king-size) and a smart, modern bathroom that are all set off the central hallway.

Outside there is plenty of parking right by the house with the seating area in the grassed garden making the most of the wonderful expansive views out over the surrounding countryside to the Halladale River. The cottage is reached via a steep driveway from the main road and parking is also available at the top of the drive.

Map & Local

Fishing can be arranged in the local lochs and rivers and walks lead out all around from the cottage. The beautiful stretch of sandy beach at Melvich (7 miles) is great for surfing and as it is a bit of a ‘hidden gem’ you may even have the whole beach to yourself. Melvich also has a village shop/PO and a hotel restaurant that serves excellent meals.

Heading east along the north coast Thurso (22 miles) is the place for supermarket shopping and there is also a bike hire shop there. Bird watchers will be in awe of the puffins and array of other seabirds that can be seen nesting on the cliffs at the RSPB site at Dunnet Head (32.5 miles).

In the summer months wildlife cruises head out from John o’ Groats (49 miles) to showcase the seabird colonies, seals and even orcas that have been spotted nearby. The wonderful Orkney isles are easily reachable for day trips from John o’Groats with the ferry crossing only taking about 40 minutes. Hop on as a foot passenger or take the car across to explore that bit further afield.

At Duncansby Head the striking Duncansby sea stacks sit impressively out in the water, the biggest of which (known as the Great Stack) stands at over 200 metres high! A very picturesque walks leads up to the cliff where you can view the stacks and they are certainly good subjects for some pretty striking photographs.

There is another RSPB nature reserve at Forsinard Flows (7.5 miles) where the vast peatland landscape and vibrant flora and fauna have created one of the best places for wildlife watching in Scotland. A trail leads right around the reserve and you may well see frogs, lizards and dragonflies along the way, as well as buzzards, red grouse and even golden eagles up in the skies.

The skies around Rosie’s Cottage are incredibly dark due to the lack of light pollution in the area, so some stargazing is definitely in order. You may even be lucky enough, in the right conditions, to catch sight of the dancing Northern Lights.
