Set down a quiet lane right in the heart of the Sutherland village of Golspie is Bluebell Cottage, a charming little retreat that is particularly suited to couples and is named after the sweet bluebell woods at Dunrobin Castle (1 mile).

Sitting alongside its sister property, Snowdrop Cottage, in a short road of historic buildings it is fresh and bright throughout. Everything is easily to hand here as the sitting/dining room and kitchen are all in together creating a wonderful, airy open plan layout.
Admire the flames dancing in the wood-burning stove from the comfort of the sofa whilst watching a film on the Smart TV. The kitchen area has been set up to one side of the room and the dining table is by the window, while a door opens up to the grassed garden.
The modern bathroom has been cleverly designed to be suitable for everyone, including those with limited mobility. It has a low sink, grab rails and an open wet room style shower as well as the added luxury of cosy underfloor heating. In the spacious double bedroom there is a super king-size bed to stretch out on and it can be converted into twin beds for maximum flexibility if required.
At the rear of the cottage is a secure garden with a large patio and grassed lawn. On street parking is usually available just outside the house or further parking is available in the estate office carpark just along the road.
Just at the end of the street the Golspie Burn can be crossed via a pedestrian footbridge or by car through a small ford to reach a good walking route on a pretty seashore landscape that belongs to the estate.
For a night off from cooking there is an award-winning fish and chip shop in the village, as well as the Stags Head pub/restaurant, a takeaway and a few cafés too. At the Golspie Golf Club a full round of 18 holes can be played followed by a meal in the restaurant afterwards.
From the edge of the village the Big Burn Walk is an interesting route that heads up a gorge to the Big Burn waterfall that is particularly striking after heavy rainfall. To the north of Golspie the ruins of the Carn Liath Broch, an Iron Age broch, can be explored for a fascinating insight into what everyday life would have been like back then.
In Brora (5 miles), that is known for its lovely long sandy beach, there are more eateries to try and another golf course as well. The Brora Heritage Centre there is a small museum that explains the local geology and the village’s mining history.
Tain (17.5 miles) has a choice of supermarkets, some of which will deliver groceries direct to the cottage. The town is home to the famous Glenmorangie Distillery where the ‘Men of Tain’ create the finest single malt and run tours showing the whole process. Some of the stills used even have copper necks that are the same height as a giraffe’s!
