What looks like a traditional farm cottage from the outside is so much more, as this inviting retreat offers surprising amounts of space and light once guests venture inside. The sitting room’s wood-burning stove offers a warm welcome after trips out exploring the picturesque surrounding area or blowing the cobwebs away on a walk along one of the great nearby beaches.
The kitchen and dining room have been combined to create a wonderfully sociable area to eat and catch up together in. Its little window seat is a nice spot to sit with a morning cuppa and a door provides access directly to the garden.
A family bathroom is tucked away under the stairs and off the airy landing upstairs lie two attractive bedrooms, one of which is a double and the other is a twin. They are both dressed in lovely calming tones and have roof windows that show off the rural scene spread out before them.
The outdoor seating area on the patio to the rear of the house has an outlook over open hillside to the woodland beyond with steps that then lead up to the rest of the sloping grass garden.
With so much to fit into a stay at Shepherd’s Cottage, guests can rest easy in the house’s peaceful setting ready for further adventures the next day.
As Dunrobin Castle is less than five minutes’ drive away, a visit is sure to be one of the first items on the agenda. Tour tickets also allow for access to the gorgeous garden grounds, which were laid out by famous architect Sir Charles Barry, the museum within the grounds and their impressive falconry displays.
What was once the Duke of Sutherland’s private train station was made accessible to the public back in the 1940s. Dunrobin Castle train station (0.5 miles) provides easy access to have a wander around Golspie (1.5 miles) or head up the coast to Brora (4.5 miles) for a trip to the beach.
A manageable and very scenic walking route, which is suitable for most ages and abilities, leads from the Big Burn carpark in Golspie and heads up a rocky gorge to a stunning set of waterfalls that are quite a sight to behold.
The Highland Wildcat mountain biking trails are a range of exhilarating graded trails that ascend Ben Bhraggie from Golspie. The black trail is particularly challenging but is well worth it for those with the grit to take on its ‘lactic ladder’.
Brora’s long stretch of sandy beach is wonderfully unspoilt with remarkably clear water that is incredibly inviting. Seals, otters and dolphins are often spotted there and don’t be surprised to come across some of the local Highland cows relaxing on the sand.
Head out for a really special round of golf on the Royal Dornoch Golf Course (12 miles) or take the opportunity to visit one of Scotland’s most iconic distilleries, Glenmorangie Whisky Distillery in Tain (18 miles) for a tour and tasting session.
