Overview

The house’s history manifests itself in the interesting architecture of the building with original features such as cast iron pillars, wooden panelling and arches over the windows that all hark back to its past. A welcoming atmosphere prevails throughout from the crunch of the gravel down the private driveway on the approach to the luxury accommodation that can be found within.

Guests can spread out into the attractive sitting room with its ornamental fireplace or curl up around the wood-burning stove in the TV room. In the kitchen there is a stylish Rayburn to cook on as well as the option of a handy double electric oven for meals to be enjoyed around the large farmhouse dining table. Should a rather grander dining experience be on the cards, the formal traditional dining room is just the place.

With four double bedrooms (two of which have en suite shower rooms) and a twin room to choose from upstairs the spacious house is ideal for larger parties of guests. The bedrooms are all light and bright and the family bathroom has both a bath and a walk-in corner shower.

An enclosed area with a very sheltered deck is laid out by the front door and the huge garden trails off into a woodland area beyond that is an oasis for wildlife with busy bees buzzing around and the charming sound of birds singing in the trees. With extensive lawns and lots of nice plants and trees dotted around there is plenty to discover including a pond with a pretty heron water feature (care to be taken), a dedicated BBQ area and a quaint summerhouse that is decked out inside with comfy seating. An attractive riverside walk leads along the banks of the River Thurso to Halkirk.

Map & Local

The cute little village of Halkirk (1 mile) has a corner shop and a hotel restaurant where a wealth of fresh local seafood can be sampled so it is ideal for having a meal out with just a short stroll back afterwards.

At the end of July each year Halkirk plays host to an influx of visitors for the spectacle of the Halkirk Highland Games where traditional heavy events such as tossing the caber are quite the sight to see in person!

Nearby Thurso (7 miles) is the largest town in Caithness and there is a lovely walk to be had along its sandy beach that is a great spot for surfing. The North Coast Visitor Centre offers a fascinating insight into the history of Caithness and has a gallery, café and gift shop for souvenirs.

It is worth taking the opportunity to head to John O’Groats (23 miles) on the north eastern tip of the mainland to grab a photo with the famous signpost there. The village is also a good place to spot Atlantic puffins in their breeding season (mainly May to July). Park up in John O’Groats and take the incredibly scenic walk along the clifftops to the two imposing Duncansby sea stacks, taking in the well-known Duncansby Head Stevenson Lighthouse along the way.

The amazing gardens at Castle Mey (17.5 miles), where the Queen Mother used to reside on trips to Scotland, are really impressive and well worth exploring followed by a tour of the inside of the castle with one of the experienced guides, or a stop off at the animal centre that children will adore! As it is so far north, Caithness is one of the best places on the UK mainland to see the fascinating Northern Lights.
