Farr Beach View is very fittingly named as it enjoys a magnificent situation just a short wander from the gorgeous sands of Farr Bay near Bettyhill, making it the absolutely perfect location for a relaxing seaside break.
This traditional rural cottage has been cleverly extended to house a delightful, double height sitting room that has become the real heart of the house. Large picture windows and sliding glass doors make it incredibly bright and inviting and it just begs guests to settle in and properly unwind.
Next door, the contemporary kitchen oozes sophistication and there is elegant seating at the breakfast bar just alongside. The little reading nook in the corner by the front door is a great place to catch up on the latest novel or use the map on the wall to plan out places to visit.
The colourful bathroom is laid out downstairs with a little utility area next to it and an amazing intricate staircase leads straight up into the bright and airy double bedroom which has a twin room off it. In the double bedroom seating has been set up by the window so the sea view can be fully absorbed and binoculars allow for some wildlife spotting. Otters and seals can often be seen, as well as stunning golden eagles and a wide array of seabirds.
Evenings can be spent sitting out watching the gorgeous sunset with a wee dram from the Caithness stone benches in the garden which have been positioned in the prime spot for fully appreciating its stunning beauty.
With the unspoilt beach an easy 10 minute walk away, it can be hard to think of anything other than getting that wonderful white sand between the toes as soon as possible. Don't forget to pack the wetsuits as it is also the ideal place to have a go at surfing or paddleboarding.
The grocery shop in Bettyhill has a surprising range of goodies but it is only small so it is worth stocking up before arriving or heading to Thurso (30 miles) to visit the supermarkets. For a small village, Bettyhill has a good choice of eateries to head to and there are electric car charging points available.
Further round the coast at Torrisdale Bay (8 miles) a lovely long stretch sandy beach can be found and, at low tide, the remains of a World War II ship can be seen protruding from the sand. The River Naver, which is known as a great salmon river, drains into the bay and fishing permits can be purchased from the shop in Bettyhill.
A very picturesque walk leads up scenic nearby Borgie Glen (7 miles). It can be steep in places but is worth it for the expansive views of the area that it affords from the top. Don’t be alarmed on coming across something a little bit eerie along the way as the Lonesome Pine Trail leads up to ‘The Unknown’, an impressive skeleton-shaped sculpture created by famous Scottish sculptor Kenny Hunter.
Whilst this far north a trip up to John O’Groats (50 miles) is an absolute must. While the village is widely thought of as being the most northerly point of the UK mainland, the official point is actually at Dunnet Head where a 19th century Stevenson lighthouse still lights the way to this day. The RSPB reserve there is home to an amazing variety of seabirds and there are even colourful puffins to spot!
