Overview

‘Iolaire’ means eagle in Gaelic and it has been very appropriately used as sea eagles, with their distinctive white tails, are just one of the stunning species that can be seen here. Inside, the refined entrance hall offers a warm welcome and leads through to the elegant sitting room that is very generously sized with a lovely open fire to sit around and further seating set up by the window looking out towards the famous Suilven mountain.

The well-equipped kitchen has a relaxed breakfasting area and more formal dining takes place in the dining room where another open fire crackles away making for cosy extended evenings spent setting the world to rights over dinner and drinks.

All of the bedrooms are off the rather grand upper landing which even has a sofa that is a nice spot to get away to and read that previously neglected novel in peace. In the master double bedroom the views really do take centre stage and the large bay window shows them off perfectly. It offers guests the choice of a sea view in one direction and mountains in the other, with a beautiful chaise longue to recline on whilst admiring them.

There are two twin rooms to choose from, the second of which is great to watch the sunset from. The ‘family suite’ is particularly handy as it has its own bathroom and a double bedroom that has a twin room off it with steps that lead down to the space that children are sure to love.

A private, tarmacked road winds up to the house and there plenty of space for parking is provided. The rough grounds trail off into the surrounding countryside where swathes of heather can be seen all around and the sea view is one that guests are sure to never tire of.

Please note: Due to the risk of wildfires in the area, BBQs of any kind are not permitted at Iolaire Lodge.

Map & Local

The house’s handy position means that it is easy to pop down to the Inver Lodge Hotel just down the road for a meal (open Apr to Oct) or walk a bit further down to the village to grab some goodies from the shop or a coffee at the café.

To really take in the scenery in all its glory it is well worth venturing out with North Coast Sea Tours for one of their fascinating boat trips that leave from the village harbour. The sunset tour is particularly picturesque and there are plenty of opportunities for spotting seals, dolphins and lots of different seabirds.

Ben More Assynt and Conival are the two nearest munros to tackle and there are also a few corbetts nearby which, whilst being less of a challenge, still make for very enjoyable climbs rewarded by stunning views from the summits.

Just a 15 minute drive away is the gorgeous white sandy beach of Achmelvich Bay (4.5 miles) that is great to visit no matter what the weather. Take some time to beachcomb and paddle in the amazingly clear water whilst admiring the beautiful surrounding views or bring along the paddleboards or surfboards and take to the water.

For those who fancy seeing more of the area the ‘wee mad road of Sutherland’ that follows the coastline up to Unapool (24 miles) is just the ticket. This single track road may not be for the faint-hearted in places but it is great fun to drive and allows for ample photo opportunities along the way.
