The cottage has been thoroughly modernised to create a contemporary holiday home from which to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The main living area is double height and open plan with stylish seating around the wood-burning stove and a whole wall of windows that keep it all very light and bright.
At one end of the cottage is a comfy TV area and hidden away behind an innovative concertina door is a modern shower room with a large walk-in shower. The other end of the cottage is given over to a well-equipped kitchen with a handy dining area and useful utility room.
From here an open spiral staircase leads up to the spacious, airy double bedroom that is set up in the roof space.
Back downstairs glass doors lead out to a lovely decked area and the rest of the extensive garden is laid mainly to grass with nothing but open fields beyond it.
The quiet roads around the cottage are ideal for walking and the St Cuthbert’s Way walking route can be joined at Bonjedward (9 miles). If you prefer exploring on two wheels there are a few different mountain biking trails for you to choose from nearby.
Jedburgh is a bustling town with a range of cafés, pubs and restaurants, as well as supermarkets, an award-winning butchers shop and plenty of interesting little shops to wander around. There are also historical sights to take in including Jedburgh Abbey, Mary Queen of Scots House and Jedburgh Castle Jail that is the only existing example of its kind and offers free admission.
On the other side of Jedburgh the Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre (11.5 miles) is an interesting place to spend an afternoon (open Mar – Oct). As well as the visitor centre there is an adventure playground that children are sure to love and a café that makes a great pit stop.
There are some forest walks around the centre and a trail that leads from the car park up to the Waterloo Monument on the summit of Penielheugh. This 150 foot high tower was built to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo and today offers some amazing views, even from its base. For an even more impressive vista you can climb the spiral staircase within the tower (key available locally) to take in an amazing 360 degree panoramic view of the whole of the Borders.
In the pretty village of St Boswells (16 miles) you will find a nice little café/bookshop and well-stocked delicatessen. A few miles out of the village stands the mighty William Wallace Statue that is well worth stopping to see and photograph. A bit further on from the statue the ‘Scott’s View’ viewpoint showcases an absolutely glorious view out across the surrounding countryside to the Eildon hills beyond.
