Set on the beautiful Old Melrose Estate near Melrose (2.5 miles) the cottage occupies a gorgeous woodland setting on a peninsula that has the River Tweed on 3 sides with miles of pretty walks and riverside trails that just beg to be explored. Guests have the use of the stunning Victorian walled garden and can wander to the Estate's tearooms for a light lunch or a slice of cake.

This converted coach house has been lovingly refurbished throughout and is presented in a pretty country cottage style that is a clever blend of traditional and modern. At the heart of the inviting sitting room is a wood-burning stove that is perfect for warming up in front of after the day’s activities. The dining kitchen is very smart and well-equipped for cooking up a storm in style and the ground floor is kept cosy throughout by underfloor heating.

Upstairs is a family bathroom, twin bedroom (converts to double) and a double bedroom with the added advantage of a snug/dressing room that provides handy storage and also has a second TV area so that all viewing tastes can be catered for.

Outside the private, Victorian walled garden is a delightful place to sit and eat, admire the plants and flowers and delight at the chickens and pet rabbits wandering around. Children can play in the woods where they can build dens and ride their bikes. Grownups and those feeling less energetic can check out the antiques in the Estate's furniture studio and bookshop.

The owners live next door but the cottage has its own parking area and is not overlooked, so they are on hand for any queries but are also very respectful of guests' privacy and are happy to leave guests to enjoy the peace and quiet.

Map & Local

Walkers are spoilt for choice with beautiful walks leading off into the countryside all around (maps available), plenty of hills to climb and stunning views to stumble upon along the way.

On the opposite side of the River Tweed is the wonderful Scott’s View from which an amazing expansive view of the river and the Eildon hills can be seen. It is well worth the 10 minute drive up to the viewpoint to take in the vista that Sir Walter Scott was, unsurprisingly, so fond of.

In Newtown St Boswells (2 miles) there is a small supermarket and a well-stocked garden centre for those of a green fingered persuasion.

St Boswells (2.5 miles) has a good pub/restaurant and a lovely café/book shop with a deli behind it that foodies are sure to love. Golfers can choose between the golf course in St Boswells that is in an idyllic spot on the bank of the River Tweed, or the picturesque course at the foot of the Eildon hills in Melrose.

Melrose (2.5 miles) itself is a bustling town with plenty of interesting shops to amble around, as well as a supermarket, excellent butcher, greengrocer and a wealth of cafés, pubs and restaurants to try out. A visit to the town would not be complete without stopping off to see Melrose Abbey that was founded in 1136 and is still surprisingly well preserved considering its age.

Culturally Old Melrose is in the centre of the Scottish Borders with abbeys, castles and stately homes all around. For those looking for outdoor activities there are plenty of gardens to explore as well as mountain biking at Glentress Forest, clay pigeon shooting at Braidwood just outside Midlem, as well as golf nearby.

With so much to see and do in the surrounding area there may be no need to venture further afield but if a day of shopping or sightseeing in the city beckons it is under an hour’s train ride up to Edinburgh from Tweedbank (4.5 miles). The beaches of Coldingham and North Berwick are under an hour's drive away and the northumberland coastline is accessible for day trips. Bamburgh, Seahouses and Holy Island are all well worth a visit.
