Just outside the pretty town of Peebles in the Scottish Borders and only quarter of a mile from the renowned mountain biking trail from which it takes its name, is Glentress Cottage. Tucked away in a rural setting but still with easy access to many activities, it really does offer the best of both worlds.
As soon as you arrive at the cottage you are welcomed by an inviting entrance hall that merely hints at the style and comfort that is to be found within. The large contemporary sitting/dining room has plenty of cosy seating around the wood-burning stove and a separate dining area alongside. On one side of the room French doors, that allow light to flood in, open out onto a charming patio area (with furniture). On the other side, more French doors lead you out to the warm and inviting sun room that is the perfect place to sit and enjoy the lovely views of the surrounding hills.
From the sitting room an archway takes you through to the chic, very well-equipped kitchen with its stylish slate tiling and traditional Belfast sink. It has lots of space for cooking and a 5-ring gas range that is an absolute joy to cook on. There is a neat utility room that houses the cottage’s laundry facilities and off that is a handy shower room. Also on this level there is a beautifully presented double bedroom and a very modern family bathroom with bath and shower over.
Upstairs there are three more bedrooms that are accessed off the bright galleried landing. The stylish master bedroom has an impressive picture window (and equally impressive light fitting) from which to further admire the scenery. From there, a corridor with a bank of wardrobes (providing ample storage space) leads through to the lavish master bathroom that has a double-ended bath and a large walk-in shower. The other bedrooms, a double bedroom and a twin, are both light and airy and have been beautifully dressed.
Outside, the cottage is set in its own enclosed grassed garden (3ft fence) with a large patio area (with furniture) and a shed that provides safe storage for bikes – there is even a rack for your muddy wellies at the back door. If you fancy a break from cooking in the evening you are in walking distance of a Steak House restaurant.
Glentress Video
The cottage is perfectly placed for mountain biking being in easy reach of not one but two of the 7stanes series of mountain biking trail centres. Glentress, only quarter of a mile away, has a variety of graded routes for different ages and abilities.
It also has a bike shop, showers, changing rooms and an excellent café. Just down the road a level, tarmac cycleway takes you all the way to the other 7stanes centre at Innerleithen (5 miles), with a series of trails and some downhill routes that are best suited to more experienced riders.
There is a hotel at Cardrona (2 miles) where you can enjoy a round of golf or even indulge yourself with a pampering spa day. You can also fish at Cardrona on the Upper Tweed section of the famous River Tweed (permits available) that is renowned for its salmon fishing from February to November.
Peebles (2 miles) is a bustling town with supermarkets and plenty of small independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. There is even a chocolate and pastry school where you can learn how to make some tasty treats.
Further afield, the beautiful capital of Edinburgh (25 miles) is under an hour's drive away, or 50 minutes by train from Galashiels (16.5 miles), so is in easy reach for a day trip that can be spent enjoying its abundance of shops, museums, galleries and restaurants.
