Set in a pretty row in the charming village of Town Yetholm in the Scottish Borders is Lyon Cottage, an inviting retreat that is perfectly placed for exploring the beautiful Cheviot hills.

This deceptively spacious cottage dates back to the 1700s with the original wooden beamed ceiling having been retained in the charming sitting room that is warmed through by its central wood-burning stove. In the kitchen the AGA-style stove makes cooking a real joy whilst everyone gathers together for meals at the farmhouse dining table.
Stairs lead up firstly to the modern family bathroom and then on to the two bedrooms. The master bedroom (king-size) has a handy en suite shower room and lovely views out over the hills and there is also an attractive twin bedroom.
Behind the cottage the enclosed garden is a real suntrap with colourful borders full of mature plants and seating from which to admire wonderful views out towards Staerough Hill. There is also a little summerhouse with further seating so that the garden can be appreciated in any weather.
Parking is right by the front door or at the end of the garden to the rear.
For a small village Town Yetholm, and its counterpart over the river, Kirk Yetholm, are very well catered for with the two friendly pubs, both of which are in very easy walking distance and serve delicious meals.
Just across the green is a shop with a good range of supplies and a sweet café/gift shop above and there is also an excellent butcher in the village.
Walkers and hill climbers will find plenty to occupy them with walking off out into the hills right from the doorstep. There are lots of waymarked paths to follow around the Cheviot hills, some of which follow along parts of the St Cuthbert’s Way. Cyclists will find the quiet roads and lanes ideal for exploring on two wheels or trying out the numerous cycle paths that are dotted around the surrounding countryside.
The highest summit in the nearby Cheviot range is The Cheviot itself that is a fair trek to tackle (allow for around 5 hours to go up and back) but is certainly worth it for the wonderful expansive views that can be enjoyed at the top.
Kelso (7 miles) has a couple of supermarkets and a great selection of pubs, restaurants and cafés to choose from when a break from cooking beckons.
A visit to the area wouldn’t be complete without a day trip up to the capital Edinburgh. It takes just over an hour’s to drive to or, if you prefer not to take the car into the city centre, simply catch the train from Tweedbank (24 miles). Over on the east coast (half an hour’s drive away) are several gorgeous long stretches of sandy beach that are perfect for a refreshing stroll or a paddle if you are feeling brave!
