St Abbs is a picturesque harbour village that sits at the foot of the St Abbs Head National Nature Reserve. From the cliffs, you will experience breathtaking views of the rugged Berwickshire coastline. Enjoy spectacular walks and nature trails, and a lovely sandy beach at nearby Coldingham.
The unique charm of St Abbs has made it a popular location for film crews. The village was featured in the Avengers: Endgame movie as the fictional place ‘New Asgard’. It also starred as the island of ‘Eroda’ in the Harry Styles music video.
St Abbs has a couple of cosy cafes serving fresh seafood, including Ebbcarrs Cafe at the harbour where you can enjoy a traditional Cullen Skink. The visitor centre offers spectacular views of the harbour, as well as interactive displays and exhibits about the village’s interesting history and culture.
There are sight-seeing boat trips available in and around St Abbs, as well as charters available for snorkelling, scuba-diving and open-water swimming for the more adventurous.
The historic fishing port of Eyemouth is only 5 miles away and includes an array of shops and restaurants to explore. Eyemouth also boasts an interesting museum, an ancient fort, and the opportunity to feed the seals!
The nearest large town is Berwick-upon-Tweed, right on the border with England, with its rich history and fortifications it is well worth a visit, and you can continue south to Lindisfarne (Holy Island), Alnwick with its castle and gardens, and the wonderful beaches of the Northumberland coast.
To the north, there are the seaside towns of Dunbar and North Berwick to explore and, of course, the magnificent East Lothian golf courses, including Muirfield itself. Locally, Eyemouth also has a picturesque course.
For walkers, the Southern Upland Way ends just up the coast at Cockburnspath, while St Cuthbert's Way runs between Melrose and Lindisfarne. The Berwickshire Coastal Path goes right past the house and there is also plenty of stunning scenery to explore in the Lammermuir Hills to the north and the Northumberland National Park to the south.
Inland, there is a fine selection of country houses to visit, among them Paxton House and Manderston. Edinburgh is only 45 miles away, and you can get there by train from Berwick for a relaxing day trip.
