Hallburn House is a delightful retreat in a large, pretty garden set on the picturesque Riddell Estate, in the rolling Scottish Borders countryside near the village of Lilliesleaf (2 miles).

Inside, large windows in the sitting room flood the room with light while an open fire crackles away at its heart creating a lovely, relaxing atmosphere. The kitchen has everything required for creating some tasty delights that can be served up in the formal dining room where another open fire makes it the just the place to linger over evening meals.
The little entrance hall provides useful storage and even has a piano and there is also a handy WC on this level. Ramps lead right up to the front door and those with mobility issues will find the downstairs double bedroom ideal as it is all on one level and has an adjacent wet room.
Upstairs are three further attractive bedrooms and a family bathroom with the choice of a chic rolltop bath or separate, modern shower. The spacious master bedroom has an en suite bathroom with a bath and shower over and, as all of the bedrooms have zip-link beds, they can be configured as double or twin as required.
In the enclosed garden outside the vast lawn is great for pets and children alike to play and run off some steam. There is a patio seating area and lots of mature shrubs and trees that give a nice private feeling, as well as a summerhouse and connected garage/games room that provides secure storage space (available from April 2021).
Fishing, horse riding and clay pigeon shooting are all available nearby and, with miles of countryside to explore all around, walkers and cyclists will certainly find plenty to keep them occupied. Selkirk (5 miles) is the place to head to for supermarket shopping or one of the local delicacies – a Selkirk Bannock.
Melrose (9.5 miles) is a charming town that is very well catered for in terms of good quality shops, eateries and historical sites such as Melrose Abbey and the Trimontium Museum Trust that houses interesting artefacts related to the area’s Roman history.
Melrose sits at the foot of the wonderful Eildon hills that dominate the surrounding landscape. They can be seen for miles around drawing in hill climbers to ascend one, two, or all three of the peaks with amazing, panoramic views to be admired from the summits.
History enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Jedburgh (12.5 miles) to see Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum and Mary Queen of Scots’ House. At the castle the museum shows why it was known by some as ‘the most comfortable jail in Scotland’! The Mary Queen of Scots’ Visitor Centre tells the tale of the queen’s fascinating life and even has her ‘death mask’ that was cast from her severed head.
A trip to Edinburgh is an absolute must and the train service from Tweedbank (11 miles) runs right into the town centre in under an hour, so it is ideal for a day trip to the beautiful capital.
