Right at the heart of the inviting open plan living area is a wood-burning stove that keeps everything nice and cosy and provides the perfect place to toast weary toes after days out exploring. Glass doors show off the lovely woodland view and the majestic River Tweed that can be seen peeking through the trees.
It is quite an experience to stretch out on the king-size bed and wake up to the beautiful scene laid out beyond the sliding doors and in the colourful bathroom there is the handy choice of a large walk-in shower as well as the relaxing bath tub.
Time will certainly want to be spent out on the decked seating area where the sound of birds singing in the trees adds to the soothing atmosphere that pervades here, making it great for soaking up the morning sun or lingering over an evening drink.
A dedicated path leads right down to the banks of the River Tweed where pretty strolls lead along the banks and a variety of wildlife can be spotted. The tearoom then makes for a good stop off point for some restorative tea and cake afterwards.
As part of a conservation-focused Estate with stunning woodland walks and riverside trails, East Tweed is perfect for those seeking a relaxing and peaceful retreat surrounded by nature and wildlife.
With the wonderful Eildon hills on display throughout the estate one of the first of many walks to be had is to climb one, or even all three, of them. A circular route makes this possible and the amazing panoramic vistas from the summits certainly make the effort well worthwhile.
Across the river from the estate is ‘Scott’s View’ the famous viewpoint that Sir Walter Scott is said to have been hugely fond of and just along the road is an impressive statue that stands in tribute to William Wallace.
History buffs will love a visit to Smailholm Tower 10 minutes’ drive further on from Scott’s View, which was quite the stronghold in its day rising to 65 metres high with 2.5 metre thick stone walls to protect it. It is fascinating to wander around the outside or tickets are available for the exhibition inside that illustrates Sir Walter Scott’s life.
In Melrose (2.5 miles) all of the shops, pubs and eateries required can be found as well as striking Melrose Abbey, which is a somewhat unexpected sight amidst the hustle and bustle of the town. It is one of four abbeys in the Scottish Borders with a walking and cycling route that allows the others at Jedburgh, Kelso and Dryburgh to also be taken in.
It is under an hour’s drive over to the Berwickshire coast for a mosey on the sandy beach at Eyemouth (36 miles) followed by the traditional seaside treat of fish and chips. There are lots of other beautiful beaches dotted on this scenic coastline, many of which are remarkably clean and unspoilt.
