Set on the picturesque Elliston Estate near St Boswells in the Scottish Borders, Coachman’s Cottage is a traditional house that has been given a fine new lease of life as an inviting rural holiday home.
What was once the estate’s 19th century coach house has been transformed into a warm retreat that is perfectly positioned for re-connecting with nature and drinking in the peaceful rural surroundings. It is a prime example of how an old building can be thoughtfully and imaginatively repurposed.
In the spacious, elegant sitting room with its lovely high ceilings a roaring fire crackles away in the fireplace, merely hinting at all of the cosy evenings to come. The lovely library wall encourages guests to disconnect from their devices and take time out to delve into a good book.
The dining kitchen allows the chat to keep flowing whilst the nominated cook whips up some hearty fare and it is supplemented by a wee utility room housing the laundry facilities. The handy downstairs double bedroom with accompanying en suite bathroom is ideal for those with mobility issues and the other bedroom is laid out upstairs alongside a shower room.
Larger parties of guests can have access to The Byre adjoining the house that is very well equipped with its own sitting room and dining room, as well as two further en suite bedrooms. Also set around the pretty courtyard is sister property Byreman’s Cottage and, only a couple of minutes’ walk away, Gardener’s Cottage. When it is time to get the wellies out, there is seemingly endless countryside to explore both within the estate and beyond.
Please note: The cottage has an EPC rating of E and The Byre has an EPC rating of D.
In St Boswells (2.5 miles) there is a great 9 hole golf course that welcomes visitors and has buggy and trolley hire available. There are also a couple of restaurants to try, as well as a lovely bookshop/café, butcher and a small shop to stock up on supplies at.
Nearby Midlem (4.5 miles) offers the chance to have a go at clay pigeon shooting, air rifle shooting and even a clever virtual reality shooting simulator. Should fishing be on the cards there is the choice of fly fishing at Clerklands Loch or a day on the river fishing for salmon on some of the Middle Tweed beats where some sizeable catches have been recorded.
Melrose (5.5 miles) is the place to head to for nights out enjoying a meal at one of the excellent restaurants or a drink in one of the bars there. It is equally appealing during the day as its historic attractions of Melrose Abbey, which dates back to the 12th century, and the Trimontium Museum, which showcases the area’s Roman heritage, are well worth visiting.
The Scottish Borders has a rich history just begging to be discovered with four ancient Abbeys (Melrose being one of them) as well as fascinating stately homes, interesting ancient towers and impressive castles. Waymarked walking routes criss cross the landscape all around with sections of the Southern Upland Way and St Cuthbert’s Way to take on.
No holiday to the area would be complete without a day trip up to the beautiful capital Edinburgh. The train stations at Tweedbank (6.5 miles) and Galashiels (miles) make it easy to jump onboard and relax, arriving into the city centre in only around 50 minutes.
