After taking in some of the refreshing sea air to help reawaken the senses, the inviting cottage interior awaits. Cosiness is the word of the day here with a wood-burning stove at the heart of the sitting room, pretty stained glass windows that show off the garden and a lovely library wall that encourages guests to unwind with a good book.
The kitchen is neat and perfectly formed and there is also a little dining room in which to enjoy lingering meals together reminiscing or making plans for activities to fit into the rest of the trip.
A handy WC is also tucked away downstairs and the spacious double bedroom is upstairs with a smart dressing table set up by the window and the accommodation completed by a contemporary shower room with a large walk-in shower. The chic décor throughout the house is interspersed with splashes of nautical charm as reminders of how special it is to be ‘by the seaside’.
Seating has been positioned right by the front door in an ideal position for watching the world go by with a morning coffee or dinner in the evening. On street parking is available and from the grassed garden area it is just a short stroll to the amenities of the village.
Please note: This cottage is not suitable for children under 16 years old.
The village itself has a nice laidback feeling to it, with a shop to top up on supplies just a few doors along from the cottage and two different pubs to choose from for drinks or meals out.
Make sure to pack the bucket and spade as the beautiful sandy beach of Coldingham Bay is only 15 minutes’ walk away. It has won many awards for its cleanliness and water quality so it is perfect for an invigorating dip, or the opportunity to try surfing, kayaking or stand up paddleboarding with lessons and equipment hire available. It is particularly worth hiring a wet suit as the water gets rather chilly!
Out at St Abbs Head (1.5 miles) the nature reserve is home to a dazzling array of seabirds that make their homes on the cliffs including guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes - there have been sightings of puffins too. St Abbs village is very picturesque and fans of the Marvel films may recognise it from its role as New Asgard in the ‘Avengers: EndGame’ film. It is also known as one of the best spots in the UK for scuba diving.
Part of the scenic Berwickshire Coastal Path leads from St Abbs down to Eyemouth (3 miles). Boats can be seen coming in and out of this busy working harbour, often followed by cheeky seals hungry for some fish scraps. There is even the chance to feed them from a pole which is quite an experience!
Eyemouth has a small stretch of beach and has made a name for itself locally as the place to head to for the seaside treat of fish and chips, perhaps followed by some award-winning ice cream. The town’s 18-hole links golf course is set in an unrivalled position on the coast with amazing sea views that can’t fail to impress whilst playing a round or two.
Bustling Berwick-upon-Tweed (13 miles) is full of shops, pubs and eateries to try out. From the lighthouse out on the pier there is a great view back towards the town and dolphins can often be spotted jumping out in the water. Boat trips are available for a closer look and further down the Northumberland coast there are even more amazing beaches to explore. It may well be hard to pick a favourite, but what better excuse is needed for a return trip?
