Overview

Luckenburn Cottage, a secluded retreat nestled in its own valley on the edge of Leithope Forest, offers breathtaking views of the Cheviot Hills. With its peaceful surroundings, absence of traffic and magical dark skies, this single-storey cottage provides the perfect getaway for those seeking a slower pace and blissful interlude without modern technology. All the attractions of the Scottish Borders await too with just 13 miles to the historic town of Jedburgh.

Embrace a digital detox and soak up the peaceful beauty of the Cheviot hills. While the cottage offers a landline for essential communication (with an honesty box system), take this opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Step into the charming sitting room, where the original open fire takes centre stage, complemented by cosy underfloor heating throughout. There is no TV or mobile signal…. so, unwind with a good book, indulge in a movie night with the DVD player/collection or maybe revel in the nostalgia of board games with your family. There is a traditional kist with an array of board games, puzzles and toys, a collection of suitable DVDs as well as wildlife identification books and small selection of fiction books to available. Indulge in the tranquillity treat of being unplugged, allowing you to escape from it all and de-stress in Luckenburn’s truly wild and unspoilt setting.

The adjoining kitchen/dining areas create a sociable space for gathering, sharing experiences after walking or day trips to Edinburgh or Alnwick, while enjoying stunning views. This unique retreat has been meticulously planned with your comfort and convenience in mind with modern kitchen amenities and an excellently equipped laundry/drying link too for fishing gear, wet weather clothing and bike storage.

The cottage features three attractive bedrooms, each offering flexibility to be configured as twin or double (queen-size) according to your needs. Set in champion sheep country, the absence of pets, coupled with hypo-allergenic bedding provides relaxed confidence.

French doors from each room lead to a raised, south-facing deck, where you can enjoy al fresco drinks or meals while listening to the soothing sound of the nearby burn, immersed in the wildness of the natural surroundings. Keep an eye out for deer and various bird species that frequently visit the area. Children, in particular, will be thrilled to spot tiddlers in the burn or the completely wild, white, rabbit!

Hillwalkers, ramblers and mountain bikers will be spoilt for choice with adventures to be had in every direction. Luckenburn is just a short distance from the Scotland/England border, and Northumberland National Park. St Cuthberts Way runs close by, as does the northern end of the Pennine Way, and the ancient Roman Road ‘Dere Street’. After a long day exploring the hills, you can relax on your private veranda or cosy up in front of the open fire.

Embark on your extraordinary adventure by traversing the half-mile farm track (less suitable for low-slung vehicles) to reach Luckenburn. While requiring careful driving, it sets the stage for exciting experiences awaiting you. Keep an eye out for the occasional sheep, lamb or badger crossing, adding to the rural charm of your trip. Experience the best of both worlds – the serenity and freedom of essentially off-grid living coupled with the comforts of modern life.

Map & Local

Make sure to pack the wellies or walking boots as it is time to get out into the great outdoors exploring the forest and surrounding countryside. A series of different walking routes, such as Roman Dere Street, traverse the area with the Southern Upland Way and the Pennine Way just two of the others to try out in easy reach.

A lack of light pollution creates ideal conditions for star gazing and it is fascinating to see how many stars can be seen with the naked eye or, bring along some binoculars to fully appreciate the amazing 'dark sky' above.

The market towns of Jedburgh (13 miles) and Kelso (19 miles) both have historic Abbeys that are interesting to walk around, as well as a good range of shops and eateries. Each summer most of the local towns have a week-long festival of celebrations with a schedule of special events and hundreds of horses and riders taking to the streets in processions. Hawick’s Common Riding, especially, really is quite something to behold!

History enthusiasts are spoilt for choice as the Scottish Borders is steeped in historic sights. With battle fields, ancient tower houses, stately homes and even castles to visit, the holiday agenda is certainly going to be a packed one at Luckenburn.

At the nearby Kielder Water and Forest Park there are a wide range of activities on offer with everything from mountain biking and horse riding to kayaking and canoeing on the huge, man-made lake.
