Prepare for a real adventure at secluded escape Luckenburn Cottage, set in its own valley nestled on the edge of picturesque Leithope Forest with wonderful views of the glorious Cheviot hills. Those looking to escape the stresses and strains of everyday life and connect with nature will have found their match in this cottage.
The natural environment around the single storey cottage remains remarkably unspoilt so it offers guests a welcome change of scenery and a taste of a more relaxed, rural pace of life. One of a pair of cottages set alongside each other (the other used by the owners infrequently), there are really only sheep for neighbours here.
At the heart of the charming sitting room the unusual, original open fire has been retained and is supplemented by the welcome addition of cosy underfloor heating throughout the room. Broadband and mobile phone free, it is the perfect place to step away from technology for a proper break and the chance to catch up on some reading. Although no TV signal is available there is a DVD player if a movie night beckons and, as the kitchen/dining areas are right alongside, it is a very sociable space to gather in.
There is a handy flexible layout where all three of the attractive bedrooms can be configured as either twin or double (queen-size) depending on requirements. Each has French doors that provide direct access out to a raised, south-facing deck that wraps around the back of the cottage. Listen to the soothing sound of the burn trickling by whilst sitting out with al fresco drinks or meals looking out over the array of wildflowers that flourish here. Seeing the deer coming down to drink from the burn is delightful and twitchers will be in their element watching all of the birds who are regular visitors.
Luckenburn is accessed via half a mile of rough farm track that is less suitable for low slung vehicles. This should be driven slowly and carefully particularly as there may be sheep and lambs crossing and the journey is just the beginning of the adventure!
Make sure to pack the wellies or walking boots as it is time to get out into the great outdoors exploring the forest and surrounding countryside. A series of different walking routes, such as Roman Dere Street, traverse the area with the Southern Upland Way and the Pennine Way just two of the others to try out in easy reach.
A lack of light pollution creates ideal conditions for star gazing and it is fascinating to see how many stars can be seen with the naked eye or, bring along some binoculars to fully appreciate the amazing 'dark sky' above.
The market towns of Jedburgh (13 miles) and Kelso (19 miles) both have historic Abbeys that are interesting to walk around, as well as a good range of shops and eateries. Each summer most of the local towns have a week-long festival of celebrations with a schedule of special events and hundreds of horses and riders taking to the streets in processions. Hawick’s Common Riding, especially, really is quite something to behold!
History enthusiasts are spoilt for choice as the Scottish Borders is steeped in historic sights. With battle fields, ancient tower houses, stately homes and even castles to visit, the holiday agenda is certainly going to be a packed one at Luckenburn.
At the nearby Kielder Water and Forest Park there are a wide range of activities on offer with everything from mountain biking and horse riding to kayaking and canoeing on the huge, man-made lake.
