The Wheel House is an elegant, detached house set just a stone’s throw from the lovely seashore, in the heart of the village of Garlieston, near Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway.

Set on the site of an 18th century corn mill, this traditional house still has the water wheel in the garden, hence its very fitting name! The kitchen/dining room is downstairs with a neat utility room that supplements it and a sun trap conservatory to admire the sea views from whatever the weather. There is a double and a pretty twin bedroom on this level with underfloor heating to keep them cosy and a wet room that they share.
Open tread stairs lead upstairs to where the welcoming sitting room has been laid out, so that the amazing seascape can be fully appreciated from the huge patio doors that frame it perfectly.
The master double bedroom is very spacious with a king-size bed to spread out on and a handy en suite shower room. There is also a little reading room/study that provides a nice, quiet space to retreat to if required.
As well as having an attractive outdoor dining area, the extensive walled garden’s most fascinating feature is certainly the full-size water wheel. Secure storage is available for bikes, etc and there is a ramp up to the entrance that is useful for those with limited mobility.
With beautiful Garlieston Bay right on the doorstep the first activity on the agenda is sure to be a stroll along the inviting sandy beach opposite the house. A coastal footpath runs from Garlieston along to the Isle of Whithorn with wonderful views to take in along the way.
There is a friendly local pub within the village that serves bar meals and The Pheasant, just a short drive away, is a good place to head to for an evening meal should a break from cooking beckon.
Just outside Garlieston are the Galloway House Gardens that are set within 50 acres of delightful parkland. There are wonderful walks to be had around the scenic woodland and in early spring a riot of colour emerges as an abundance of flowers burst into life.
Wigtown (8 miles) is known as Scotland’s National Book Town and is home to the annual Wigtown Book Festival that takes place every Autumn. Outwith the festival there are lots of book shops and literature-related enterprises to enjoy exploring. The town is also the nearest place for supermarket shopping and has a picturesque 9 hole golf course to try out.
Mountain bikers will be in their element as there are two excellent 7stanes mountain biking centres in easy reach. The Kirroughtree centre (17 miles) is particularly family friendly with a great range of trails and a kid’s play area, while the Glentrool (24 miles) centre has more challenging trails to tackle.
