What was an old cow shed dating back to 1820 has been transformed into a comfy, cosy base for getting out exploring. Those preferring to relax in the warm will find the wood-burning stove in the charming sitting room particularly enticing and a door opens up to the courtyard allowing the sunlight to flood in. The kitchen and dining are combined in a very spacious, partly double height room that encourages meals to be eaten together whilst swapping highlights from the day’s agenda of activities.
A landing runs the full length of the house upstairs with the bedrooms off it at either end. Both of the well presented bedrooms have the added advantage of having their own en suite shower room and, as the house is set into the bank at the rear, they also have doors providing direct access to the garden (one step down).
Parking is behind the owner’s house with pathways that lead to the cottage’s separate, gated garden. The flat, gravelled path is great for transporting luggage or for those with limited mobility or there are rough steps down to the courtyard seating and barbeque.
The terraced, grassed garden is a haven for wildlife with deer and squirrels often popping by. Lots of birds will keep ‘twitchers’ occupied and the courtyard is a peaceful, idyllic spot to listen to them singing away in the trees. The River Scour runs down a steep bank beyond the garden so care should be taken. Interestingly, one of the nearby houses is where blacksmith Kirkpatrick Macmillan invented the first pedal driven bicycle.
A sweet little selection of shops can be found in Thornhill (3 miles) where the outstanding Buccleuch and Queensbury Arms bar/restaurant has an excellent lunch and dinner menu, as well as a beer garden to sit out in on sunny days.
Rounds of golf can be enjoyed at Thornhill Golf Course where the 18 holes are dotted around a very picturesque parkland course. It is the home course of Andrew Coltart who played in the Ryder Cup amongst many other competitions and went on to become a commentator.
If the sweet tooth strikes then there are an array of delicious delights to be found at the Moniaive Chocolatiers in the village whose tartan chocolate is as pretty as it is tasty and makes the perfect souvenir to take back home.
The stunning, historic Drumlanrig Castle (5 miles) may be familiar as it was one of the wonderful filming locations used in the second series of Outlander where it represented Bellhurst Manor. Tours of the interior are available in season and there is an adventure playground within the pretty grounds. Fishing can be arranged on the River Nith or in the stocked lochs on the estate.
Mountain bikers will be thrilled with the choice of two superb 7stanes mountain biking centres in easy reach nearby. Ae Forest (12.5 miles) is known as one of the host venues for the Scottish Downhill Association series and the centre at Dalbeattie (27 miles) has tricky technical sections running over large granite slabs.
Dumfries (16 miles) has all of the shops, pubs and restaurants required and the gorgeous stretch of sandy beach at Southerness is only an hour’s drive away when a day at the seaside beckons.
