This ‘chocolate box’ style cottage’s delightful exterior hints at what is to come inside where a wood-burning stove in the sitting room keeps it cosy whatever the weather and is a great focal point.
Everything needed to prepare tasty meals is provided in the modern kitchen and there is a formal dining room to enjoy meals in. A sunny conservatory off the dining room looks out over the lovely garden and is a great place to enjoy the pretty surroundings in comfort.
In the luxurious master suite is a double bedroom with a sleek en suite bathroom that has the choice of the bath and the separate, modern shower cubicle. There are then two further double bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower over the bath that are all set out on the one level.
The Bothy is set in its own grassed garden and there is also access to the breathtaking beauty of the walled garden that is just adjacent, as well as the rest of the country estate.
The estate is family-run and Preston Hall itself, a magnificent 18th century Palladian mansion house, has been in the family since 1789. Within the estate there are 250 acres of managed woodland to explore and scenic walks to be had along the banks of the Tyne Water that borders the estate.
Pathhead (1.5 miles) has a good chip shop and an excellent bakery for some freshly baked treats. Just outside the village is historic Crichton Castle (4 miles), a late 14th century tower house with an intriguing diamond faceted internal façade that has managed to stand the test of time.
The Vogrie Country Park (3.5 miles) has extensive parkland with 11.5 miles of paths leading around it and plenty of wildlife to spot along the way. There is everything from frogs, dragonflies and beetles to woodpeckers, jays, nuthatchs and buzzard, as well as an adventure playground and miniature railway that children will love.
Haddington (10 miles) has lots of interesting shops and eateries to try out, as well as an 18 hole golf course with buggy hire available. To the north of Haddington stands the Hopetoun Monument that stands at 95 feet high and can be climbed up (not for those with limited mobility) for some totally amazing 360 degree views of the surrounding area.
Edinburgh (12 miles) has all the attractions and shops you could hope for along with dozens of cultural delights such as galleries, museums, the historic Edinburgh Castle, Scotts Monument and the imposing Arthur’s Seat.
Every August the Edinburgh Festival brings a carnival like atmosphere to the city when a huge array of comedy, theatre performances, gigs and street theatre comes to town. Park and ride facilities can be accessed on the outskirts of the city or there is a regular bus service from Pathhead.
Golfers will be in their element here as the excellent courses at Gullane, Muirfield and Luffness are all in easy reach about 20/30 minutes’ drive away.
