A dear little lodge in a heavenly lochside situation on the beautiful island of Mull will surely whet the appetite of many a visitor to Scotland. Such is Assapol Lodge, near Bunessan on the Ross of Mull, close to the south western tip of the island and the magical island of Iona.

Standing quite alone, with only the croft farm up the hill for unobtrusive company, it is a newly built, trim and compact timber lodge. Its decking veranda is right above the waters of Loch Assapol, so you can sit in perfect peace and look across the water or watch the sun go down. The fact that the lodge is surrounded by 3 acres of ground which is a corncrake conservation area is bound to prove a huge attraction for lovers of wildlife and birds in particular.
Inside, the living accommodation is open plan, with a well-fitted corner kitchen-dining area and a cosy sitting area with electric stove in the corner. This, plus its electric heating, ensures cosiness all year round.
A double bedroom and shower room complete the internal accommodation and outside there is parking just above the lodge, leading down to it by a quite steep path. The lodge is, therefore, not really suitable for those of limited mobility.
There is the possibility of some ad hoc fishing in the loch and guests can simply roll out of bed to cast their line! Bunessan (1m) has a shop/PO, hotel and cafe, with more facilities a few miles away at Fionnphort.
At Fionnphort you can take the little foot ferry over to Iona, or catch the boat for trips to the Treshnish Isles (seabird colonies) and the amazing island of Staffa with its dramatic hexagonal rock formations and famous Fingal's Cave.
This coastline is famous for its mix of secluded sandy and rocky coves, where in the surrounding waters you may see seals, porpoises and even the occasional minke whale. Driving back eastwards (the direction in which you will have come from the ferry), you can explore the amazing coastline at Carsaig, a long-time favourite with artists, or continue to Duart Castle.
Alternatively, if you turn left just past Pennyghael, you can take the scenic road up the west side of the island, past Ulva and Gruline (riding) and on up to the breathtaking beach at Calgary, with views away to the Isles of Coll and Tiree.
Tobermory, the 'capital' of the island, with its brightly painted houses clustering round the harbour, should not be missed, and if you fancy a bit of culture while you're there, this can be provided by the famous Mull Little Theatre on the road to Tobermory. Music enthusiasts will probably already be aware of the Mull Music Festival, featuring rock and traditional music and held every year in the last week of April at venues across the island.
