Overview

The cottage has been extensively refurbished and extended to create a spacious, inviting getaway. Inside, the cosy sitting room has a wood-burning stove with seating in front of it for toasting your toes. Right at the heart of the house is a charming conservatory with another wood-burning stove and a dining area from which to admire the view out over Linne Mhuirich, a sea inlet of Loch Sween.

The well-equipped kitchen has a large range cooker and a central island that provides useful extra space for food preparation. It is supplemented by a separate utility/boot room that houses the laundry facilities and still has plenty of room for storing muddy boots and drying off wet coats, etc. There is also a family bathroom and a handy downstairs double bedroom on this level.

Upstairs there are two further bedrooms (a double and a twin) with an additional little seating area in between (with TV). The bedrooms have coombed ceilings and are kept light and bright by their roof windows. There is also a shower room that both bedrooms can access.

Outside there is parking right beside the house and a rough garden area (not enclosed) that is shared with the neighbouring cottage. There is a patio area (furniture) to the front of the house with an outlook of Linne Mhuirich to sit and admire.

Map & Local

The area around Linne Mhuirich is known as a wetland habitat for many birds including buzzards, greater spotted woodpeckers and swans and eider ducks at certain times of year.

The nearest settlement is Tayvallich (4 miles) with its picturesque harbour where you can watch the boats and yachts bobbing away in the distance. The village has a shop, a café and an Inn that serves delicious meals with plenty of local produce and fresh seafood.

A passenger ferry runs from Tayvallich over to the beautiful Isle of Jura. The island is known for its whisky and tours of the famous distillery are available, or you can pick up ‘a wee dram’ to take away with you. There are lovely walks all over the island with some stunning scenery to admire along the way. One such walk leads up to a viewpoint that looks out over the churning Corryvreckan whirlpool, or for something more strenuous, hikers may want to try climbing the Paps of Jura.

The route from Ardrishaig that follows the canal towpath all the way up to Crinan (12 miles) is ideal for both walking and cycling as it is fairly flat and very picturesque. There are lots of pretty picnic spots along the route where you can watch the boats negotiating the canal and its locks. Lochgilphead (16 miles) has a few shops and also offers cycle hire so you can explore the area on two wheels.

Oban (45 miles) has a range of little shops and eateries and is also a main ferry port for trips out to Mull and the Outer Hebridean islands. Sea Kayak Oban offers sea kayaking expeditions and lessons for all different levels of ability.

We had a very wet and wild week but we particularly enjoyed watching the red squirrels from the conservatory.
