Overview

In the heart of the house, the elegant, contemporary kitchen/dining room, is a large range cooker that is perfect for creating delicious meals for everyone. Eating at the dining table by the window allows for full appreciation of the expansive vista across the fields to the bay and sea beyond.

An inviting open fire keeps the sitting room toasty and off it is a charming sunroom that has been cleverly positioned facing the amazing view with huge picture windows and a glass door that show it off effortlessly. Hours are easily whiled away stretched out on the chaise longue gazing across the every-changing outlook of the water to the Isle of Mull in the distance. A twin bedroom and family bathroom are also laid out on this level.

A steep, narrow wooden staircase (may not be suitable for those with limited mobility) leads upstairs where, past the cute little port hole window on the landing, are two spacious bedrooms, one with king-size bed and the other a twin, and sunny sea outlooks can be found.

Watch the world go by whilst sipping a morning coffee out on the porch seating as the idyllic scene of boats bobbing in the sparkling waters drifts by. The pretty, fenced garden is ideal for pets and kids to run around in and storage for sporting equipment is provided.

Please note: Vehicles cannot be taken over to Iona so cars should be parked up at the car park in Fionnphort on Mull prior to boarding the foot ferry.

Map & Local

Tranquil Iona is reached by passenger ferry only and has a refreshingly different, slower pace of life that is felt immediately on arrival. Cars can be left at Fionnphort on Mull and the ferry arrives into the harbour less than 5 minutes’ walk from the house.

The Iona Craft Shop is chock-full of delightful knitwear, tweed and beautiful jewellery that make great souvenirs to keep as holiday mementos of give to loved ones. They also offer traditional bicycle hire which is a great way of getting around as the island is only 1.5 miles wide and 3 miles long.

Right across the road a stone’s throw away are the ruins of the medieval 12th century Iona Nunnery that are fascinating to wander around in the footsteps of the original convent of nuns. The ruins lead through to the impressive Iona Abbey that was founded by St Columba and is still used as a place of worship to this day.

A well-stocked grocery shop can be found a couple more doors away and the St Columba Larder has lots of artisan food and spirits that are produced on the island. The coastline of the island is dotted with gorgeous white sandy beaches that are ideal for soaking in some sun or keeping an eye out for wading and sea birds, otters and even golden and white-tailed sea eagles.

There are a couple of options for eating out with the St Columba Hotel to stop at for a drink, meal or delicious afternoon tea and the Argyll Hotel that uses locally sourced ingredients as well as plenty of fresh seafood that is not surprising considering its setting.

Boat trips run out to the incredible Fingal’s Cave, a huge sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa that at low tide has a natural walkway that provides access all the way inside (appropriate clothing and footwear required). Huge, hexagonal basalt columns make up the cave and as the waves lap inside they create an almost musical sounding echo. On the way to and from the island colourful puffins can often be seen nesting on the cliffs above.

Please Note: During the winter months (November - February) most of the amenities on Iona do close down.
