Camus Na-H'airdhe (pronounced camus na hay riv) means the 'bay of the walled enclosure'. This enclosure was built to keep sheep, cattle and goats penned up before they were taken away to market by boat and parts of the old wall can still be seen behind the cottage.
Now part of the Laudale Estate this wee traditional cottage dates back to the 1800s and, now fully refurbished, it offers cosy accommodation with all modern comforts and also a large dose of wow factor.
The living area, being open plan, means that everything is readily to hand. The sitting area faces the loch and therefore enjoys wonderful views, with comfortable seating and a cosy wood-burning stove with feature flue at its heart. It has a light, polished wood floor, with a very comprehensive kitchen area with all appliances and a neat dining table right beside it. There are also patio doors out to a gravelled terrace area, again with lovely loch views.
All on one level, the double bedroom has a mirrored wardrobe and is very elegantly dressed, while the shower room is both spacious and rather luxurious as well.
Outside, off the patio is a fenced garden area which is secluded from the road by a high wall and there is plenty of parking in the yard behind which is seldom used by the Estate. The buildings behind the cottage are used only for storage.
The little road in front of the cottage trundles down to Lochaline (17 miles) where you can catch the little ferry which plies back and forth to Fishnish on the Isle of Mull (no booking necessary), so nothing could be easier than a day trip to the magical island.
In the other direction, you are only 4 miles from Strontian, a charming little village which stretches along the lochside, which has hotels, a few shops and a cafe/bistro. Should you decide to continue westward from there (and you certainly should) the road affords breathtaking views as it winds alternately through woodland and along the shores of the loch.
At Salen, you have the choice of either continuing west to Kilchoan, Ardnamurchan Point and the wonderful beach at Sanna, or turning north to Acharacle and on to Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig and then by ferry even on to the Isle of Skye if you wish.
Walkers and climbers will find themselves surrounded by challenges here, while the loch offers opportunities for sailing and angling. Fort William, just an hour away by the Ardgour Ferry, is a bustling town with supermarkets, hotels, a golf course and a good leisure centre to which the Estate can offer a weekly pass (at a charge). For the ultimate challenge, you can climb Ben Nevis while you're there, mountain bike on the world championship descents at Aonach Mor or take the gondola up the mountain.
