For those who really do like to get away from it all, Gorteneorn Bothy has an excellent situation just a few hundred yards from the shores of Kentra Bay, near Acharacle on the beautiful Ardnamurchan peninsula in the west of Scotland.

Reached by about a mile of private rough track (4 x 4 required) it stands alone, through the trees from Gorteneorn House which is its only neighbour.
Once a tumbledown ruin, it has now been rebuilt and completely refurbished and transformed into a characterful and comfortable holiday home for two people. It is easy to see why it has become such a popular destination for honeymoon couples and anyone seeking peace and relaxation. The hallway, which runs across the front of the house, would not disgrace a much larger dwelling and serves as a worthy introduction to the delights to come.
The enormous living area is truly impressive with its polished wooden floor, rafters and panelled roof with spot lights and roof windows that let in plenty of light. At one end of the room is the original exposed stone wall with its inset wood-burning stove. Two comfortable sofas flank the stove and in the centre of the room the dining table is set against one of the windows overlooking the loch, meaning that you can have a meal with a view! At the other end of the room is the stylishly well-equipped kitchen, with traditional Belfast sink.
Across the hall, at the far end of the house, is the double bedroom with king-size bed and plentiful wardrobe storage and next to it is the modern shower room.
Outside, there is plenty of parking and a rough garden (with furniture) with the rocky beach just a few minutes' walk away. Gorteneorn Bothy really does offer so much more than you would normally expect from a one bedroom cottage!
Ardnamurchan is one of the wildest and most scenically rewarding parts of Scotland and there is no lack of things to do here.
Walking is a given and there is a good path along the shore, to say nothing of the surrounding hills - Ben Laga and Ben Resipol are probably the closest mountains of any size. The quiet roads along the coast are not hilly and also make for good cycling.
Whether on two feet or on two wheels, you are likely to see plenty of wildlife - deer, otters, buzzards, wading birds of all kinds, even the occasional eagle - all may be spotted. The romantic ruin of Castle Tioram, just up the coast at Dorlin, is a very pleasant short excursion.
In fact, those who do like to do a bit of exploring when they are on holiday will find no lack of interesting places to visit. Once back at Acharacle (4 miles, with hotel and shops) you can head north towards Arisaig and Morar with its glorious silver sands, and on to Mallaig, where you can catch the ferry for a trip to the Isle of Skye.
If you turn along the Road to the Isles in the other direction you will come to Loch Shiel and Glenfinnan, where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard for the Jacobite rebellion of 1745.
Alternatively, from Acharacle you can head south to Loch Sunart, where, at Salen (with hotel) the road divides. One way takes you west to Kilchoan, where in summer a ferry plies across to Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. You can carry on to the fabulous sands at Sanna and to the very tip of the British mainland at Ardnamurchan Point, with its Stevenson lighthouse. The other road takes you east along the lochside to Strontian and on to the Corran Ferry and Fort William. Or from Strontian, you can head across Morvern to Lochaline and another ferry to Mull.
