Reached by about a mile and a half of private track (only suitable for vehicles with higher ground clearance) is Gorteneorn. The traditional farmhouse occupies a magnificent position overlooking peaceful, sandy Kentra Bay. It stands alone, through the trees from Gorteneorn Bothy, which is its only neighbour. The Bothy can also be booked for larger groups wishing to holiday together.
The house itself is suited as a well-appointed family home, with plenty of space for families to lounge. The entrance hall still has its original flagstone floor, and there is a cosy sitting room with a wood-burning stove to rest with a morning cuppa or after a long day exploring the west coast of Scotland.
The traditional farmhouse-style kitchen has an oil-fired Aga, which keeps the area warm. There’s ready access to the back door and is therefore ideal for children to run in and out from the garden, and for watching the brilliant west coast sunset in the evenings. Also on this level is a handy utility room and a shower room with a WC.
Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, one double room and two twin rooms (one of which has a TV/DVD player). A bright and striking family bathroom serves guests upstairs.
Outside, there is plenty of space for parking right by the door and a large, grassed garden. Gorteneorn is the perfect paradise for a family holiday, far from traffic, where adults and children alike can enjoy the peace and privacy of Kentra Bay. Spend your time with water adventures on the coastline (Gorteneorn also has secure storage for outdoor equipment), exploring the sublime surroundings like nearby Ben Laga or the neighbouring woodland, or simply watching the wandering deer in the garden.
The house is ideally placed for one of the most original experiences in the area, as it stands beside the track to the 'Singing Sands'. It is an easy walk of about 1.5 miles from the house and is rewarded by a stunning beach fringed by birchwoods. To make the sands ‘sing’, the trick is to shuffle across the sand. The noise is made by the grains of sand rubbing together - they are completely round and of just the right size and level of humidity to generate a distinct sound.
Scale the nearby mountains Ben Laga and Ben Resipole for a brilliant hike and spectacular views from its peak to Loch Sunart and in good weather, Mull, Coll, Muck, Rum and Eigg. As well as Singing Sands Beach, less than 2 miles away, another brilliant sandy beach at Ardtoe is just under 6 miles from Gorteneorn.
Nearby Acharacle has shops, cafés and a hotel restaurant. The ruins of Castle Tioram (6 miles) sit on a tidal island in Loch Moidart and offer brilliant vistas.
Boat trips are available from Acharacle up 18-mile-long Loch Shiel to Glenfinnan to see a wide range of bird life, ending at the famous Harry Potter viaduct. Other trips run from Salen jetty and Laga bay for wildlife spotting on Loch Sunart with a chance to spot white-tailed eagles, seals, otters, dolphins and porpoises.
Alternatively, you can explore northwards, to the silver sands of Arisaig (27 miles) and Morar where there is also an excellent links golf course at Traigh. 30 miles west will bring you to another extraordinary beach at Sanna Bay, a must-see during your time at Gorteneorn.
Venture to the Isle of Mull (50 miles) for a great day trip that’s well worth the journey. The town of Fort William and its attractions and amenities are 40/ 48 miles away. Tackle the great Ben Nevis or remain cosy by the fire, it’s all accessible through a stay at Gorteneorn.
