Reached by about a mile and a half of private rough track (4x4 required) is Gorteneorn. This substantial, traditional farmhouse occupies a magnificent position overlooking quiet and sandy Kentra Bay. It stands alone, through the trees from Gorteneorn Bothy, which is its only neighbour.
The house itself is sure to find favour with its tenants, being a most comfortable and well-appointed family home. The entrance hall still has its original flagstone floor and there is a cosy sitting room with wood-burning stove and plenty of space for guests of all ages to follow their various pursuits, while enfolding them all in its warmth and brightness.
The traditional farmhouse-style kitchen has an oil-fired Aga which keeps the place toasty warm. It is a real family ‘hang-out’ area, with ready access to the back door, therefore ideal for children to run in and out from the garden. Also on this level is a handy utility room and a shower room with WC.
Upstairs there are three bedrooms, one double room and two twin rooms (one of which has a TV/DVD player), which are all simply and attractively furnished. A bright and striking family bathroom completes the accommodation and having bathroom facilities both upstairs and down is another boon, especially for larger parties.
Outside there is plenty of space for parking right by the door and a large grassed garden. This is a perfect paradise for a family holiday, far from traffic, where adults and children alike will revel in the peace and privacy of their surroundings. You could spend your time messing about on the shoreline (why not bring your own boat or canoe), exploring the surrounding hills and woodlands or organising impromptu games on the lawns in front of the house. Doesn't that sound quite idyllic?
Acharacle has shops and an hotel and from there you can head south and east to the point of Ardnamurchan (a ferry plies back and forth in summer from Kilchoan to Tobermory on Mull).
The house is ideally placed for one of the most original experiences in the area, as it stands beside the track to the 'Singing Sands'. A visit to this unique and lovely beach will be an essential expedition for guests. It is an easy walk of about three miles from the house and is rewarded by a stunning beach fringed by birchwoods. To make the sands ‘sing’ the trick is to shuffle across in either shoes or bare feet. The noise is made by the grains of sand rubbing together - they are completely round and of just the right size and level of humidity to generate the sound.
Alternatively, you can explore northwards, to the silver sands of Arisaig (27 miles) and Morar (where there is also an excellent golf course at Traigh). If you really can't go for the whole week without some retail therapy, Fort William is 45 miles from Acharacle.
You could also take the Jacobite steam train which runs between Fort William and Mallaig and which in the course of its journey crosses the 'Hogwarts viaduct' made famous in the Harry Potter films.
