Map & Local

Salen, a quaint coastal village nestled on the banks of Loch Sunart overlooking Salen Bay. The village boasts. A jetty, equipped with visitor moorings, and The Salen Jetty Shop (0.5 miles), where you can purchase basic supplies, local produce and crafts and refreshments.

Fort William (40 miles) is the largest town in the area, and boasts supermarkets, outdoor equipment suppliers, restaurants, and bars. Known as the outdoor capital of the UK, Fort William is also home to the magnificent Ben Nevis, the UK’s tallest mountain, as well as the Nevis Range bike tracks (home to the UCI mountain bike world series) where you can take the bike uplift gondola to your choice of 3 downhill tracks.

The Ardnamurchan Peninsula is a stunning part of the west highlands. The rugged northern coastline, flanked by the pristine beaches of Ardtoe and Sanna Bay, is recognized as a National Scenic Area due to its remarkable scenery and natural beauty. To the south, it forms the northern shoreline of Loch Sunart, the longest sea loch in the Highlands.

Ardnamurchan, in Gaelic: Àird nam Murchan, meaning headland of the great seas, is home to the most westerly point of the British mainland, Corrachadh Mòr. It extends west from Salen out to Ardnamurchan Point and its famous lighthouse. The peninsula is an ideal location for observing majestic whales and playful dolphins passing by.

Explore the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse and Visitor Centre, 20 miles away, an iconic grade-A-listed landmark perched on the westernmost point of the British mainland. Experience a guided tour of the lighthouse or unwind at the Stables Coffee Shop, featuring outdoor seating. Be sure to visit the Foghorn viewing platform, offering stunning views out to the Inner Hebrides.

During World War II, Salen played a crucial role as a training ground for American and Canadian commandos gearing up for the D-Day landings. Evidence of this historic period can still be seen today in the form of bullet holes on the old buoy (now in the jetty car park), which was used for target practice by an American sea plane as it flew up the Loch.

Salen is an ideal hub for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers, offering hiking, wildlife photography, biking, kayaking, sailing, and fishing opportunities. The sheltered jetty provides a convenient spot for launching craft. Eagle-eyed visitors enjoy spotting otters, pine martens, and golden and sea eagles.

Explore the area from the water, with a wildlife boat trip with Ardnamurchan Charters, or enjoy a half-day excursion from the pontoons at Salen with Sunart Boat Trips and experience this picturesque location form the water, with a chance of spotting Scottish wildlife in its natural habitat.
