Boreray Cottage
Clachan Sands, North Uist
Honeymoon couples or indeed anyone seeking a romantic away-from-it-all holiday will be delighted by this dear little whitewashed Highland cottage with its thatched roof, which stands in quarter of an acre of its own grounds just yards from the silver sand shore on the Hebridean island of North Uist.

The traditional exterior hardly prepares you for what you will find inside, however, for, while maintaining its character, it has been brought right up-to-date, double glazed, efficiently heated by electricity and electric flame effect stove and with solid cherrywood floors throughout.
The owners have chosen to furnish the cottage in an engagingly eclectic style, which takes due notice of the traditional nature of the house and endows it with loads of character. This really is a holiday venue which will remain in your mind long after you have returned to the humdrum reality back home.
The living area is open plan and most comfortably furnished. The kitchen and shower room are both smart and modern, and as a final romantic flourish, the double bedroom has a four poster bed. There is plenty of parking, the sea views are stupendous and there is a handy stone barn alongside.
Here, you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves on the shore, marvel at the glorious Hebridean sunsets, stroll along the endless and mostly deserted silver sands and very probably think you have gone to heaven indeed!
Yet civilisation is not so far away. You are only 6 miles from Lochmaddy, which has a shop, post office, petrol and where the ferry arrives from Uig on Skye. Benbecula airport, with flights to the mainland, is only 20 miles away.
North Uist itself is a fascinating place which will delight those with an interest in wildlife and history. The RSPB reserve at Balranald (15 miles), for example is one of the few places in the country where you can hear the rasping cry of (and maybe even glimpse) the rare corncrake, but everywhere in the skies you may spot buzzards, hen harriers, merlins and even eagles. Visit the Neolithic chambered cairn at Barpa Langass (11 miles), for these islands have been inhabited for many thousands of years.
Causeways have now been built linking North and South Uist and Benbecula, so you can explore the length of this archipelago, finding more and more of the glorious beaches which make this place so special. Or you can take boat trips, perhaps to the Monach Islands with their enormous seal colony. The Uist Outdoor Centre at Lochmaddy offers sea kayaking, scuba diving and rock climbing among other activities. So, however active or relaxed you choose to be, a holiday at Borerary Cottage is unlikely to disappoint.
Please note: while we make every effort to be as accurate as possible, the actual position of the cottage indicated on the map above and the proximity of the amenities in the Local Info section cannot be guaranteed to be precise and should be used as a guide only.
