Overview

What was once just a ruin has been lovingly rebuilt and completely modernised by its owner to create a cosy retreat from which to start your own Hebridean adventure and discover the delights of beautiful North Uist and the rest of the archipelago.

Inside the living accommodation is open plan and is dominated by a large picture window that really showcases the amazing view of the loch. The seating has been positioned to take advantage of the view and the cosy wood-burning stove, with a neat dining area alongside and modern kitchen behind.

The romantic double bedroom is very warm and inviting with its rich furnishings and semi-canopied bed and the contemporary bathroom has the choice of a bath and shower over.

The cottage sits in rough grassed garden grounds from which gorgeous sunsets can be enjoyed in the evenings. Due to the lack of light pollution on the islands, the dark skies are ideal for star gazing and if you are lucky you may even manage to see the Northern Lights.

Map & Local

The sandy Hosta beach is only a few minutes’ walk away and one can’t help but marvel at the beautiful white sands and crystal clear turquoise waters. A walk along the beach is enjoyable whatever the weather and the machair that runs alongside is very pretty and dotted with wildflowers and rare orchids.

Bird watchers will enjoy the RSPB Balnarald (2.5 miles) reserve that is home to a wealth of species including corncrakes, lapwings, whooper swans, hen harriers and sea eagles.

The nearest town for stocking up on supplies is Lochmaddy (16.5 miles), although there is also a small supermarket at Sollas (8 miles). North Uist has plenty to offer archaeology enthusiasts with many historic sites to visit including the Barpa Langass chambered cairn, Piobull Fhinn stone circle and the Huts of Shadows Camera Obscura to name but a few.

The Westford Inn bar and restaurant at Claddich Kirkibost (6.5 miles) serve excellent meals with amazingly fresh seafood. If you prefer to catch your own, permits are available for fly fishing on the Newton, Balranald and North Uist estates by arrangement.

At Kallin harbour at Grimsay (17 miles) you can take a Lady Anne Boat Trip and head out around Ronay island and, when the tides permit, to the Monach islands where a huge grey seal colony live. The scenery on the trip is stunning and you may see otters, dolphins, basking sharks and minke whales – the boat even throws out fish to feed the sea eagles as it goes along!

There are several magnificent beaches to choose from as you drive along the coastline in either direction so you can stop and visit the ones that take your fancy. Road causeways link North Uist up with South Uist and Benbecula in between, making it easy to get out and explore the other islands.

Please note: while we make every effort to be as accurate as possible, the actual position of the cottage indicated on the map above and the proximity of the amenities in the Local Info section cannot be guaranteed to be precise and should be used as a guide only.
