Sympathetically designed along the lines of a Victorian sporting lodge, the house was actually built in the new millennium, so visitors can enjoy its perfect marriage of the old and the new. Finished and furnished to an exceptionally high standard, there is a feeling of quality throughout the entire property. Offering generous accommodation for up to 10 people in five double bedrooms, it is the ideal retreat for a family and friends holiday.
A south-facing sun room at the front and a separate games room to the rear will appeal to both young and old, as will the wide range of activities on offer in the local area. Easily reached from the A82 road, one of the main arteries of the Highlands, the property is securely fenced and has generous parking space and double garage.
The main entrance is through the Orangery/Sunroom, which gives way to a spacious hallway and access to the downstairs rooms. The heart of the house is the huge lounge, which has a wood-burning stove, large television and comfortable sofas and chairs. The lounge also features a bar and wine fridge, making it ideal for entertaining, family and friends get-togethers and celebration events. A smaller, more intimate ‘snug’ room is also available, perhaps the perfect place to squirrel yourself away for a couple of hours with a good book. Double doors lead to a dining room with ample seating for 10, while the kitchen is impressively well-equipped with a large induction range cooker, modern appliances and a breakfasting table. A laundry/utility room, with adjacent w.c. completes the downstairs accommodation.
Upstairs, with 'Red Squirrel' carpet throughout, there is a lovely master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom that features a corner bath, luxury shower and separate w.c. There are four other double bedrooms, two with en-suite shower rooms and two within easy reach of the family bathroom. It will be of particular interest to families with young children that there is a linking door between two of the bedrooms, although this can also be locked for privacy.
Situated in a separate building to the rear of the property, there is a games room with a projector screen, pool table, dartboard and table tennis, making it the ideal place for the young at heart to exercise their competitive juices. The more mature will also appreciate the building’s bar. There is also a small sun room with comfortable chairs and a stove for chillier evenings.
Invergarry is the perfect place for a Highland holiday. Easily reached from the north (Inverness, 40 miles) or south (Fort William, 25 miles), it also sits on the doorstep of some of Scotland’s wildest and most remote landscapes. The road to Skye branches off the A82 just south of Glen Albyn Lodge, while drivers who enjoy a challenge will love the twisting, 22-mile single-track switchback road to Kinlochhourn, deep in the heart of Knoydart, Scotland’s so-called last wilderness. A welcoming tearoom, open from Easter until October, sits in a converted farm steading at the end of the road.
Those who prefer to venture out on foot will relish the range of walking options available. There are around 50 Munros – mountains of more than 3000ft – within a 30-mile radius, with mighty Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak, the undoubted star of the show. Those who prefer a less strenuous walk will enjoy the Allt na Calliche (Gaelic: stream of the old woman) Trail, a gentle, three-mile woodland route that starts at the Ciste Dubh car park about a mile east of Invergarry. A little more challenging is the Loch Lundie circular walk, which starts from Invergarry Village Hall and covers about 6.5 miles.
A number of well-marked cycling trails are within easy reach of the house, including the Great Glen Way, a 75-mile route from Fort William to Inverness that runs right behind the property. Anglers will relish the range of opportunities in the area, from the many hill lochs that are filled with hungry little trout to the River Garry itself, just across the road from Glen Albyn, which is renowned as one of Scotland’s best salmon rivers. Wildlife is abundant, with golden eagles and ospreys to delight birdwatchers, while red squirrels and pine martens have been sighted on the property.
Fort Augustus, eight miles north of the house, lies at the southern end of Loch Ness. Even a sceptic finds it hard to resist the temptation to scan its dark waters for a glimpse of its legendary monster, but if Nessie is keeping her head down it is still a great place to fill up on supplies at local shops or watch the boats ascend the spectacular staircase of five locks that take vessels from the loch to the Caledonian Canal. Watersports enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities to enjoy themselves in the area, with boat trips from Fort Augustus a popular choice.
Fort William is probably the best place for a serious shopping trip, with its range of supermarkets and outdoor stores available. There are also plenty of restaurants and coffee shops in the town. Dining options closer to home include the Invergarry Hotel (0.6 miles), which has gained an impressive reputation in recent times, while the Glengarry Castle Hotel (1.2 miles) is an old-school country house that has been under the same family ownership for many years. Non-residents are welcome at the Glengarry, but booking ahead is essential. There is a footbridge across the River Garry from near Glen Albyn that shortens the walk to the hotel, but it is sometimes locked so best to check first.
The imposing ruins of Invergarry Castle, ancestral home of the chiefs of the Clan MacDonell, sit within the grounds of the hotel. Bonnie Prince Charlie is said to have stayed there after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden. Another historic site well worth visiting is the Bridge of Oich, a magnificent Victorian suspension bridge that crosses the River Oich, two miles north of the cottage.
