Step back in time to enjoy a complete getaway on the edge of roaring seas at the Principal Keeper's House, a historic retreat once occupied by a succession of lighthouse keepers and their families. It is set within the compound of the remote Rua Reidh Lighthouse which commands a dramatic setting on Wester Ross's wild coastline near Gairloch (12 miles).

Overview

Bright, airy and spacious, this charming apartment is situated on the upper floor of the keepers' accommodations building and offers stunning and ever-changing sea views that are sure to delight guests. The comfortable sitting room looks out over rugged rocks with glimpses of the Isle of Skye in the distance and the eat-in kitchen provides a cosy setting in which to share convivial meals.

One of the two bedrooms has a super king-size bed, while the other can be configured similarly or else as a twin, as required. Both of the bedrooms are en suite with contemporary, stylish shower rooms and have mesmerising full-on sea views towards the Outer Hebrides.

Binoculars are provided for a rich range of wildlife spotting opportunities and, from one comer of the compound, three other working lighthouses can be seen blinking across The Minch.

On clear nights the surrounding skies are magical as there is no light pollution other than the tower itself and there is often a good chance for sightings of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Parking is available for up to two cars and a full flight of stairs leads up to the apartment itself.

This stunning location offers exceptional opportunities for walking and hiking over intriguing moorlands and along its enticing coastline. There are beautiful views to take in along the mostly single track coastal road to Gairloch but do be sure to make use of the passing places to allow for the easy flow of traffic.

Please note: Due to weight and width restrictions on the final 3 mile approach to the property, it is only accessible by car. Due to its location, the apartment is not recommended for children under 6 years old.

Map & Local

At Big Sand beach (10 miles) a short wander over the dunes leads to unspoilt white sands that seem like they stretch on forever.

It is a lovely, sheltered place to enjoy a scenic stroll, practice some relaxing yoga or try to discover hidden treasures whilst beachcombing.

Pubs and eateries can be found in Gairloch (12 miles) where supermarket supplies can also be stocked up on. The Gairloch Museum is set in a converted nuclear bunker that has been imaginatively repurposed and now houses a range of interesting local exhibits including the huge, original lense and foghorn from the lighthouse itself.

Wildlife cruises go out on Loch Gairloch from Gairloch harbour with the chance to see otters, seals, dolphins and whales as well as a huge range of sea birds including white-tailed eagles.

At Red Point the Gairloch Trekking Centre (24 miles) run pony trekking expeditions along some wonderful beaches which is certainly an experience for the books!

Bed linen and towels are INCLUDED. Electricity is INCLUDED. Heating is by oil central heating (INCLUDED). Water is from a private source which is UV filtered and regularly tested; however (as is typical in many parts of Scotland) it can become tinted from the peat it passes through, particularly after heavy rainfall. Guests may therefore prefer to bring bottled water to drink. Wifi is INCLUDED (via a dongle which can be variable due to bouncing off 4G signal). A maximum of 2 dogs are welcome at an additional charge (2 large, 2 medium or 2 small) but must be kept on a lead at all times due to sheep near the property. If you wish to bring any other pets please contact us and we will see what we can do. No smoking.

Please note: Because of the location of the apartment, it is not recommended for children under 6. There is some 4G availability for guests to set up a hotspot to access the internet or make telephone calls (EE only). For Principal Keeper's House, the tariff for 2 persons is based on one bedroom only being made available.
