Visitor levies in Scotland
Some councils in Scotland are introducing a visitor levy, sometimes referred to as a tourist tax, on overnight accommodation, including self-catering holiday cottages.
The money raised is intended to support local services, facilities and infrastructure used by visitors.
Will a visitor levy apply to my holiday?
Visitor levies are not being introduced across the whole of Scotland. Each council decides whether to introduce a levy, how much to charge and when it will take effect.
Whether a levy applies to your booking will depend on the location of the property, your holiday dates and when your booking was made.
How much will it be?
The amount depends on the relevant council's scheme. The way the levy is calculated, and the number of nights it applies to, can vary.
We'll calculate any applicable levy during the booking process and show the amount separately in your booking breakdown.
How will I pay?
We'll normally collect the levy with your holiday balance and take care of the necessary administration.
You won't need to arrange a separate payment to the council.
What if I've already booked?
The arrangements for existing bookings depend on the relevant council's scheme. A booking made before the scheme's specified booking date may be exempt, even if the holiday takes place after the levy comes into effect.
If you're unsure whether your booking is affected, our booking team will be happy to help.
Are there any exemptions?
Certain visitors may qualify for an exemption under the relevant council's scheme. Please contact us if you think this may apply to your booking.
