Lower Largo is within a half hour drive of historic St Andrews and is typical of these small villages. Here, where the Keil Burn flows into the sea, is Dunedin Cottage. An end terraced cottage, dating from the early 1700s, it was probably here when Bonnie Prince Charlie was a lad. Certainly Alexander Selkirk, who was the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe and who was born in Lower Largo, would have passed it many a time before he set off on his historic voyage.
While its exterior may not have changed, he would scarcely recognize its interior now, however, so well have the new owners restored and refurbished the cottage. Outside, there is a pretty decking area with tubs, furniture and BBQ.
Inside, the well-fitted modern kitchen retains its beamed ceiling and there is a double bedroom downstairs with en suite shower. The heating throughout the lower part of the house is now underfloor, creating a real cosy, luxury feel.
A most interesting split staircase leads up to a twin bedroom with all the space you need, a relaxing stone-tiled bathroom (complete with corner bath) and the piece de resistance - a light and bright, south facing sitting room with open fire overlooking the estuary. This room features a striking exposed stone fireplace and is pleasingly decorated and furnished in light and restful colours.
Outside, there is a pretty decking area with tubs, furniture and BBQ.
You are well placed for all facilities here, with a little supermarket and a hotel just across the bridge and other pubs, restaurants and shops up in the village.
There is an excellent links golf course (a recognized practice ground when the Open is at St Andrews) just a mile or so away at Lundin Links, with others at Crail (15 miles) and Leven (3 miles).
The cottage is just 100 yards or so from the beach, while walkers can pick up the Fife Coastal path more or less from the door. There is also boat hire at the pier.
In the Fife hinterland, there are National Trust properties to visit at Kellie Castle and Hill of Tarvit, or spend a morning at Scotland's Secret Bunker just outside Anstruther (11 miles).
Another worthwhile destination is Mary Queen of Scots' fairytale palace at Falkland (14 miles), which could perhaps be combined with a visit to the Scottish Deer Centre to keep all the family happy. If a day in Edinburgh appeals to you, you can catch the train from Kirkcaldy (10 miles) and cross the famous Forth Rail Bridge.
