Loch Rannoch and Loch Tummel, some 30 miles to the west of Pitlochry, are justly celebrated in song and story as two of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland.

The pretty village of Kinloch Rannoch (shop, hotel and Outward Bound Centre) is situated at the eastern end of the loch, at the foot of the distinctive peak of Schiehallion (the Fairy Mountain).

At the end of the village, just a hundred yards or so from the loch is Cnoc Eoghainn, a detached stone cottage in traditional style, with a lovely enclosed garden (with furniture) to the back offering fine views of the surrounding mountains.

It is just as you would expect from this type of picture-book cottage, snug and simply but very comfortably furnished. The living room has an open fire, there is a cheerful, well-equipped kitchen, two rather stylish bedrooms and a bathroom with bath/shower. From the house it is just a couple of minutes' stroll to the hotel in one direction and the loch in the other.

In fact, the cottage is just the sort of place best suited to those who come here to walk, fish, sail, cycle or explore the beautiful surroundings. The unpretentious comfort which it offers makes it easy to relax there after a strenuous day out, while the garden offers a lovely, secluded and safe haven to enjoy at less energetic times.

Map & Local

People come to this lovely area for many reasons - to walk, climb, fish, cycle (there is a quiet single track road which runs right round the loch and the south side in particular offers lovely lochside picnic spots), observe the plentiful local wildlife or simply relax. At Cnoc Eoghainn you can do all these things from a most comfortable base.

You may also wish to visit Scotland's second most remote station at the far end of the loch. This is on the West Highland line between Glasgow and Fort William - you could even take the train up to Fort William for the day and either tackle Ben Nevis while you are there or, in summer, take the Jacobite steam train out to Arisaig and Mallaig.

In the other direction, you can take the back road over the shoulder of Schiehallion to Loch Tay, where there are lots of watersports and the bustling little town of Aberfeldy.

You can head east along Loch Tummel (look out for osprey fishing in the Loch) past the breathtaking Queen's View and historic Killiecrankie, to Pitlochry, with its Festival Theatre. There, you are on the fast A9 Perth-Inverness trunk road, which will enable you to visit Aviemore, Loch Morlich, the Cairngorms and all the delights of the central Highlands.
