Tigh Na Mara, meaning ‘house by the sea’, certainly lives up to its name with its beautiful coastal situation looking towards the Moray Firth in Fortrose on the Black Isle, near the dolphin spotting haven of Chanonry Point (2 miles).

This is a great location for a seaside holiday with the shoreline right on the doorstep and plenty to see and do nearby. In the spacious and bright sitting room the seating has been positioned to make the very most of the fantastic sea view from the bay window that is hard to tear your eyes away from and through it is a sunny dining room with more lovely sea views to admire during meals.
The kitchen is neat and well-equipped and there is a choice of places to relax as there is also a large sunroom that looks directly out over the sea and is perfect for sitting enjoying the surroundings no matter what the weather.
There are two attractive double bedrooms (one with en suite WC), two spacious single bedrooms and a shower room with a walk-in shower, all laid out on the one level.
A large parking area sits at the front of the house and to the rear is a pretty garden with mature plants and a shed that provides secure storage. Steps lead from the garden right down to the pebbly shoreline.
Fortrose itself has a small supermarket as well as shops, a café, pub and hotel restaurant to try out. It is also home to an interesting historic cathedral that dates all the way back to the 1300s.
One of the first activities on the agenda is surely a visit to Chanonry Point (2 miles) at the end of the Chanonry Ness headland. It is a fantastic place to spot bottlenose dolphins playing out in the water and can be accessed by walking along the beach from Rosemarkie (1.25 miles) or by the local shuttle bus service.
At RSPB Fairy Glen on the outskirts of Rosemarkie there is lots of birdlife to look out for around the woodland reserve with everything from bullfinches to spotted flycatchers, song thrushes and buzzards, etc. From Avoch (1.5 miles) boat trips run out for a closer look at the dolphins and other wildlife including many sea birds, seals, otters and even minke whales!
Bikes can be hired from the Fortrose Bay Campsite just 15 minutes’ walk away and mountain bikers will want to have a go at the Learnie Red Rock Trails (4.5 miles). There is something to suit all skill levels with green, blue and black trails and even an orange graded dirt jump area for more experienced riders.
On the other side of the Moray Firth sits the impressive Fort George (23.5 miles), an 18th century fortress that is still a working army barracks to this day. It has huge ramparts to walk around and a fascinating museum detailing the Highland Regiments’ history over the years with over 20,000 artefacts on display.
From Fortrose it is less than half an hour’s drive to the city of Inverness (14 miles) where there are plenty of shops to explore and a well-connected train station for heading further afield on day trips.
