It is difficult not to be immediately impressed and excited on arrival at Poyntzfield House, an exquisite Georgian mansion set in extensive garden grounds with its own swimming pool, amidst the wonderful scenery on the north coast of Scotland’s scenic Black Isle.
A very special welcome awaits guests at this stunning retreat that is perfect for reunions with friends or gathering different generations of the family to spend some quality time together. The house has a rich history with the original part dating all the way back to the 18th century and two additional wings that were added to create a U-shape with a beautiful courtyard at its centre.
Though the entrance hallway’s snug seating is sure to entice, there is so much more to come in the sophisticated drawing room. One wall has been transformed into a striking feature library wall, a fire crackles away in the wood-burning stove and there is the chance to tinkle the ivories with a sing song around the grand piano.
Meals become a thoroughly elegant affair when taken at the huge table in the splendid dining room, although it can take some time to pass the salt around! The kitchen is equipped with a large gas range cooker and pretty breakfasting area and the West Wing houses a snug with a wood-burning stove and a great games room with a full-size, antique snooker table.
As if the house wasn’t impressive enough, the icing on the cake is its fantastic heated outdoor swimming pool that has an ingenious concertina roof which can be pulled back in the sunshine, or closed to provide shelter if the weather isn’t so good. With loungers set up around the poolside, it is an absolutely idyllic spot to sunbathe or enjoy a relaxing dip.
The house’s charming courtyard is reminiscent of a Tuscan villa and there is the choice of a couple of terrace seating areas to choose from so that the sun can be followed around. Extending to over 4 acres, the delightful grounds are filled with delightful mature plants and trees that make it a joy to wander around. Something new can be discovered at every turn and children in the group can spend hours running, playing, having fun on the swings and in the wendy house or using the goal posts for footie.
As the caretakers live in the East Wing of the house (no internal access and separate garden), they are on hand for any queries but are also happy to leave guests in peace to enjoy their superb surroundings.
At Rosemarkie (6.5 miles) is a gorgeous long stretch of sandy beach that seems to go on forever, just don’t forget to bring along the buckets and spades! Mountain bikers can take on the challenge of the Learnie Red Rock Trails (6.5 miles) mountain biking trails.
Nearby Chanonry Point (8.5 miles) is known as one of the best places in Europe for dolphin spotting and they can often be seen jumping out in the Moray Firth from the shore at Fortrose (7.5 miles) as well.
Bird watchers will want to take the opportunity to head to RSPB Tollie Red Kites (17 miles) to see these fascinating birds with their distinctive markings being fed, as well as an array of other birdlife.
As bustling Inverness is only half an hour’s drive away it is easily reachable for a day trip into the largest city in the Highlands. Once in the city there are loads of shops to visit for a few souvenirs or venture into Inverness Museum and Art Gallery for a spot of culture and a browse around their interesting exhibitions.
Whin Park will be an instant hit with children with its playground areas and boating pond and those of a green fingered persuasion can take in the staggering selection of plants and flowers that thrive within Inverness Botanic Gardens.
