The cottage’s spacious accommodation offers a choice of places to relax with a comfortable sitting room with TV and either an open or electric fire and an inviting dining sunroom where a second TV makes sure all viewing tastes can be catered for.
The modern kitchen has an informal breakfast bar seating area and is supplemented by a spacious utility room with laundry facilities and a handy drying rack, etc. There is also a modern shower room and neat single bedroom with (pullout bed underneath) downstairs, as well as an entrance porch providing space for hanging coats. It even has electric boot warmers to keep toes nice and toasty.
Upstairs are an attractive double bedroom with plenty of built-in storage and a sweet little window seat, a cosy twin bedroom and a family bathroom.
Parking is right by the door and the large grassed garden is enclosed with steps leading down to the gate from which you can walk or cycle out on the quiet single track roads. A sturdy stone picnic bench in the garden has been positioned so you can see the sea so it makes a great place for al fresco dining with a view.
As Assynt is so far north it has an unusual microclimate that is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Take advantage of the mild weather with a day on the beach at Clashnessie Bay that is less than 5 minutes’ drive away and is easily accessible with parking right across the road. Children and dogs will love running wild on the sands and exploring the rock pools looking out for crabs and starfish.
A rough trail leads from the beach up to Clashnessie Falls, a 15 metre high waterfall that is particularly impressive when it swells after rainfall. If a change of scenery beckons it is just a 5 minute drive down to the beautiful Clachtoll beach (2.5 miles).
Lochinver (8.5 miles) has a small supermarket and interesting little shops, pubs and restaurants. It also plays host to the annual Assynt Highland Games every August when traditional music, dancing and heavy games come to the village.
Hill walkers will find plenty to keep them busy with several corbetts to climb nearby and the very distinctive Suilven, a sandstone mountain shaped like a policeman’s helmet, to tackle for some spectacular panoramic views.
The 19th century Stoer Lighthouse (5 miles) isn’t open to the public but it is worth a visit to take in the wonderful views out over The Minch where dolphins and even minke whales are often seen. From the carpark a 2 mile circular walk leads along to the impressive Old Man of Stoer, a huge sea stack that stands at 60 metres high.
Just over an hour’s drive leads along the shores of Loch Assynt, over the Kylesku bridge and up to Tarbet (39 miles). Ferry trips run from Tarbet harbour over to Handa island, a wildlife reserve dramatic clifftop scenery and thousands of seabirds including puffins, guillemots and razorbills.
Half an hour further up the coast at Durness (59 miles) is the fascinating Smoo Cave that is accessible by foot (not suitable for those with limited mobility) or by boat for venturing into the inner caves.
