The Steading is a beautifully converted farm building tucked into a peaceful Highland valley on the south side of Strathoykel, surrounded by open moorland and gentle hills. Set above it's only visible neighbour on a grassy terrace, it offers privacy, far-reaching views, and a real sense of escape.

Reached by a quiet single-track road from Bonar Bridge, just 11 miles away, guests will find themselves in a landscape rich in wildlife and natural beauty. Bonar Bridge provides local amenities, a golf course, and excellent access to renowned fishing rivers and scenic walking routes, making The Steading an ideal base for outdoor enthusiasts and those looking to simply slow down and unwind.
Inside, the open plan living area is bright and welcoming. With a partly double-height ceiling, warm timber finishes, large picture windows and skylights, it feels both spacious and cosy. An electric coal-effect stove adds a gentle glow, while French doors open out to a gravel terrace where you can sit with a morning coffee or a glass of wine and soak in the silence of the hills.
All on one level, the cottage is finished to a high standard throughout. There are two beautifully presented bedrooms. The larger room has a double bed that can be made up also as twin beds and includes its own en suite shower room. The second bedroom is a restful twin with equally stunning views. A separate bathroom features playful fishing-themed decor, a subtle nod to the area's angling heritage.
The kitchen is well equipped for quiet evenings in and after a day of walking the local trails or casting a line in nearby rivers, returning to the comfort and calm of The Steading is a true pleasure.
Whether you're planning a romantic retreat, a walking holiday, or a fishing-focused getaway, The Steading offers an idyllic break in a breathtaking Highland setting.
The Oykel is a well-known salmon river, which is bound to be of interest to fishermen and the scenery in the immediate area is surprisingly gentle for a place so far north.
The river valley is a broad one, flanked by wildflower meadows and woodlands, but in the background there are tempting views of Ben More Assynt, reminding you that more rugged territory is not so far away. Those seeking more gentle exercise will find lovely woodland walks at Roseland woodland trails, at Raven's Rock Gorge or the Cassley Falls. Back down the road, too, are the impressive Falls of Shin.
The Steading is set in a convenient spot for exploring the remote countryside of the north west Highlands. If you cross the river to join the A837, it will take you over to the west coast, either to Ullapool (38 miles), the stunning mountain scenery of the Coigach, to Lochinver or even to Scourie and Laxford Bridge. On this road there is a hotel at Oykel Bridge (9 miles). To the south east are the glorious beaches and championship golf course at Dornoch (24 miles) and the possibility of heading right up the coast to John O' Groats.
You could head directly north from Lairg, where there is a pony trekking centre, just over 40 miles to the very north coast at Tongue. There are some wonderful deserted beaches there and you could even go right along the top to Durness, stopping off at the famous Smoo Cave on the way. Those interested in wildlife should visit the RSPB site at Forsinard, in the midst of the amazing and unique Flow Country, arguably the largest area of blanket bog in Europe, where, in summer, you can hope to see the hen harriers, golden plovers and greenshanks which come here to breed.
