What may seem unassuming from the outside manages to both surprise and delight on entry when the homely open plan living accommodation receives guests with open arms. The wood-burning stove at the heart of the room keeps it nice and cosy with comfy seating set up in front of it for toe toasting and the neat kitchen area just alongside. Three steps then lead up from the living area to the very welcoming double bedroom area.
For a compact little hideaway the bathroom facilities are excellent as the large, colourful shower room has a walk-in shower and laundry facilities that are neatly tucked away.
Outside the rough garden surrounding the hall is fenced off with the countryside leading off into the hill behind. Red squirrels can often be seen scampering in the surrounding trees and they are fascinating to watch in action as they climb with such great ease.
As the estate is so extensive there is plenty to explore amongst the rolling, heather clad hills and forests that seem to go on for miles. There is also fishing available with a catch and release system in place.
In the autumn months the deer can be heard rutting in the fields as mating season begins. This generally happens from the end of September to early November and is quite something to hear!
From the train station in Ardgay (9 miles) it is just over an hour and a half’s journey into the city of Inverness for a day of shopping or sightseeing. Inverness Castle is set in an imposing position overlooking the River Ness and the tower can be climbed for wonderful views of the city and even as far as the Black Isle on a good day.
Golfers will want to try a round or two at Bonar Bridge & Ardgay Golf Club that has been described as a ‘mini Gleneagles’. It was even voted as the most picturesque 9 hole golf course in Scotland due to the gorgeous views all around to admire during play. Day tickets are available and there is a restaurant for a bite to eat after a hard day out on the greens.
There are further golf courses at Royal Dornoch (23.2 miles), Golspie (31 miles) and Brora (36.5 miles) so there is plenty of choice in easy driving distance. Brora also has a lovely sandy beach that is a great stop off point whilst out and about exploring.
At Dornoch (23 miles) is another attractive stretch of sandy beach as well as an great selection of eateries. The Kyle loop, a 35 mile circular cycle route which starts in Dornoch and passes through Bonar Bridge, can be joined for an challenging day long ride. Along the way, whether cycling or driving, a stop at the stunning Struie viewpoint which is known as the ‘million dollar view’, is an absolute must to take in the expansive view of the Dornoch Firth.
